What are the best ODI innings ever?

Kapil’s 175 is the best ever ODI knock for me.

1. First ODI century by an Indian cricketer

2. He arrived when score was 9/4

3. The scorecard was later 17/5, 78/7 and 140/8.

4. The second highest score was 24

5. He added an unbeaten 126 run partnership for the 9th wicket. A record that scored for 28 years.

6. Scored at a unbelievable strike rate of 126 in 1983.

7. It was the highest ODI score by any cricketer. Another record.

Kapil Dev scored just one century in ODIs. But it was arguably the greatest ODI century ever

Didn't know Kapil's 175 was first ODI hundred by an Indian. How poor India was at limited over game. It must have been a huge shock when India won that world cup.

Will always be a stain on Dilshan's character that he accepted the shot being called the "Dil Scoop" instead of it being labelled the "Marillier Thrillier", which it plainly should have been.
Totally agreed on this and I have thought about it earlier as well. It should really have been Dougscoop instead of Dilscoop. Saw Marillier do it for the first time in that match live and was thrilled. Dilshan was just one of many copycats.

Never understood people calling it the Dilscoop. Plenty did it before him, and after Marillier. First bloke I saw doing it was Ryan Campbell.

They're different shots. Dilshan did it off a front foot stride.

Losing cause (so counts half or something like that), but Jadeja vs NZ recently.
Best bowler, batsman and fielder in that game. If he'd gave got India home it'd have been the best all round performance in a game ever at a wc. Don't think it's that far off as it is.

Sachin’s 82 off 49 balls against NZ in 1994. He hit 15 fours and 2 sixes to help India chase the target in 23 overs. It was the match that launched Sachin Tendulkar as an opener and he went on to become the best ODI opener ever and arguably the best ODI batsman ever.

Well, the quality of Sharmas in the Indian team certainly seems to have improved over time. I remember Ajay Sharma from Ranji Trophy scorecards in the '90s, was a massive domestic bully.

Remember those times as well. Ajay Sharma should have played a few more test matches i feel. Played the wrong format at the international level.

I think Kevin O'Brien's innings has a decent case for greatest ODI knock of all time, all things considered. Definitely up there with Kapil against Zimbabwe.
I have heard many people say that. But I wonder why? When talking about The greatest innings ever there are numerous things to consider.

-was the innings ahead of its time?
-how strong was the oppositions's bowling attack?
-the pitch condition & how many runs did your fellow batsmen score
-the condition of your team when you came to the crease or while you are batting
-was it a winning knock?
-was it a high stakes match?

All things considered Viv's 189 against England is easily the best ever. It was ahead of it's time whereas Kevin's is not. By 2011 we have seen many such explosive knocks.
England in the early 80s had a much stronger bowling attack than in 2011.
And Viv scored nearly 70% of their team's total and 21 runs more than the total score of their opponent. Whereas Bengaluru was a flat track where the opponent already scored 300+ runs. And Kevin scored 35% of the team's total.
When Kevin came to the crease Ireland where 106/4 and from there they got to 317/7. When Viv came to the crease WI were 11/2 and everyone kept crumbling in the other end and they were 102/7 at one point. From there he guided the team to 272/9. So they both were really commendable here but I would say Viv's is better.
And they both were winning knocks.
The only thing in Kevin's favor is that it was a WC match but that doesn't change everything. The fact that Ireland were minnows doesn't make his innings better than what it was. It may be the most unexpected/ shocking inning ever but not the greatest.

If you compare Viv's 189 with Kapil's 175, it's pretty close but not quite there. Zimbabwe, despite being decent back then their bowling was inferior to the England's. And Zimbabwe scored 235 in their chase, indicating it was a good batting wicket.
