Punching out in front of his body is a (minor) weakness of Nicholls against pace bowling too. He does score runs from punching through the covers rather than defending a touch later, but if the ball moves then he edges behind or is bowled through the gate.

maybe he should just use his shovel. we've just decided in the ashes subbie that the perfect technique is to replicate ricky ponting cricket 2005 like steve smith does and shuffle to off then drive for four through the onside. never play through cover.

Shovel is good. Bent shovel is bad.

Watling playing at almost every ball here, unusual I wonder if NZ's bats have been instructed to keep the scoreboard moving given how little time is left in the match.

Latham into the nervous 70's now.

Arnold having a whinge about that Latham call but surely that was glove? Can there be a one frame delay with the sound?

Good week or so for me. Talked up Latham and Labuschagne before they went on to do well. Time to retire from the game.

Was thinking earlier that for future subcontinent tours after Ross retires it might be an idea to bat Latham at 4. After KW he's probably the best player of spin in the side, and it would be a shame to have those talents wasted by having him nicked off by Bumrah with the new ball.

Holy molee that ripped. No way we're chasing 200+ in the 4th dig, we need a 100 run lead minimum.

after the 'never cover drive' chat in the other thread, watlings plan seems to be charge and drive

very un-watling-like

Very good hundred - best he's played away in quite a long time.

Both he and Watling have been very proactive without being silly. With the amount of turn out there it will be hard for the next batsman coming in.
