Dont worry, ESPN know full well which market they need to pander to in order to generate $$Even ESPN thinks otherwise..
Last 30 years 11
Specialist batsmen
Sachin , AbdV , Kohli , Lara and Dhoni
No Ponting , no bevan
Averages in ODI cricket are really misleading. Far better to look at runs per innings. It is funny that Tendulkar averaging 11 runs less than Bevan is brought up but not him having strike rate of 14 more than Bevan.
An opener role is not to remain not out and boost his average. He is there to score runs for his team and take the attack to the opposition consistently.
Let me ask you Stephen, which player has contributed more to the team across 3 matches.
Player A : 72(81), 100(110) and 38(49)
Player B : 86*(115), 30(44) and 44(60)
Player A averages 70 and player B 80. Decide for yourself.
How many of us remember Bevan averaging more than Sachin in the Sharjah Cup 1998. That tournament is rightly known as Tendulkar's tournament with Bevan not even a footnote.
51 Vs 44 not sameYou are still ignoring the number of years, the number of matches, the number of impact innings and many other factors.
MS averaged 50 at a Strike rate of 90 over a span of 5 years.
Ponting averaged almost the same, scored at almost the same rate over a span of 10 years.
In that case , they could have Select Rohit as opener and Dhoni as WK. Instead they tried to include more Australians by selecting Gilly as WK.Dont worry, ESPN know full well which market they need to pander to in order to generate $$
The fact that Ponting played half of his matches in 00-04 bridges the gap between their numbers as the batting conditions were getting better and better.51 Vs 44 not same
90 Vs 84 not almost same rate
I compared the standard average and SR.51 Vs 44 not same
90 Vs 84 not almost same rate
Dhoni played 150 matches ( plus or minus) in that 5 years.
150 is a reasonable number, 5 years Vs 10 years is the only issue here.
2 mistakesThe only thing wrong with the ESPN XI was Kallis as allrounder at 6
I dunno, they both often batted below some players they were clearly better than, which seems to indicate it wasn't their lack of skill keeping them down the order.I'm usually not a fan of "if he was better, he'd have batted up the order" type arguments, but it really is applicable in Sachin vs. Bevan or Ponting vs. Dhoni debates.
Yeah I love Kallis but if you're desperate for him to be the allrounder in the side you have to really own it and bat him in the top four somewhere. If you don't want to do that then there are definitely better options to bat six.Warne is justified. I wouldn't do it, but it's okay, esp if the allrounder bowls pace. Kallis at 6 is just wrong.
But ponting's numbers remained the same in last 5 years of the decade. The fact that Ponting played half of his matches in 00-04 bridges the gap between their numbers as the batting conditions were getting better and better.
1995-2003 - TendulkarPonting was really only the best batsman from about 2001-07. De Villiers was the best batsman from about 2008-2012 and Kohli has been the best ever since.
75-90 Richards*
91-95 Tendulkar
96-00 Bevan
01-07 Ponting
08-12 De Villiers
13-19 Kohli
*probably not entirely truthful
Not to say that there haven't been other ATG batsmen along the way, but these stuck out as being the best in those eras.
Yea before opening he averaged 30 and hadn't even scored his first ODI tonPutting down 91-95 as Tendulkar really shows you don't really know much about his career. Didn't become great until he began opening in 1994.
