So what's the thinking on England's 1-3 at this point in time?
My guesses - Burns probably has one spot, but I literally have no idea on the other two. Ballance might be there if not blacklisted, Denly might have done enough in the West Indies to survive, and maybe someone like Duckett? Clarke?

Will Archer play for England? I can imagine him being a very good third seamer option behind Anderson and Broad, probably taking over opening duties when Anderson inevitably retires.

Dominic Sibley
Sam Northeast
Sibley has zero track record before this season, don't think England would go for him. Northeast maybe but even he hasn't done much before this season, at least not at Division 1.

The cupboard is very bare though. Hopefully we actually bowl smartly with the new ball.

He'll definitely play imo. Looks very much suited to the long form. Curran will probably get the flick.

Yes it's inevitable in my opinion that he starts in the first Test . England have been mostly short of a yard of pace for years . All our genuine quicks since Harmison have been fleeting , a good series here and there , then a marked decline or injury . It frees us up to manage Broad and Anderson's twilight years .We can bring in fast medium hopefuls without looking toothless . Sam Curran looks like he might be a fixture going forward . I fancy Tom Curran too . With Archer and possibly Wood (injury prone at Test level) , providing a bit of pace we've got a potentially better balanced attack than we've had for donkeys years . Might even be able to go on tour and win a few :D .

So far as openers goes , I haven't a clue . Neither does England . We got wicketkeepers coming out of our arses but quality opening bats are in short supply .

I think Aus have got their best chance in years to turn over England at home . We are coming into this series with very little Test cricket under our belts. Last couple of years have been ODI heavy in preparation for the World Cup .

I hopes England opens with Roy because it is a completely stupid idea, like Australia trying to open with Finch, it will not work. Maybe he could be a middle order batsman but that is doubtful as well.
I do too, but admittedly their options aren't great. And in a low scoring series a quickfire 30 might do more damage than it otherwise would.

I think much will depend on Warner and Hazelwood tbh. Smith and Cummins will be terrific, Starc will be up and down like always. So I think how Haze bowls and Warner bats will be crucial. Haze disappointed last away Ashes imo, and Warner made a lot of 50s without really going on. He needs to do that if Australia is to win, and Haze needs to be at something approaching his best.

23.66 is the new 40 at Durham right now . We are in the crapper . If you don't want him for the Ashes we'll be happy to keep him :) . We can't afford to pay him though .

Tbh I'm sort of opposed to Roy opening but at the same time there are probably positives for it in the context of or pretty dire opener situation. That he is already an established England player is something you'd imagine would help him in the transition. Got to be less daunting than going from county cricket to international level anyway.

I think he has runs near the top of the order as well. I think he was batting 3 last year for Surrey and scored runs (a century in the last game of the season I think?) The way I see it, there are probably worse options.

Archer is a much more straightforward pick imo. One of the few examples where a player being foremost heralded for his skill in limited overs cricket to actually be a justifiable selection based on first-class stats. Low 20s average with the ball and low 30s with the bat. Mostly done in Div 2 but we know he is quality.

Don't think Wood will make it unfortunately, but our alternate choices aren't bad really. Woakes is op in England so its likely he'd get in ahead of Wood and S Curran anyway. It's our batting that is the major worry really and what leads me to believe that Australia have a decent chance this summer

Both sides batting is their weak spot.

Australia have Smith and Warner back yes, but other than those two we have an opener who is untested in England (and we don't even know which opener that will be at this stage). Khawaja is decent but is a bit of a HTB. Then we have a 5 and 6 of Head and Patterson, both of which have not played a test in England. Paine's batting is likely to revert to the mean at some point also. Australia's bowling attack is potentially very strong if Cummins survives the world cup without injury (Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Pattinson all being available is unlikely but would give the selectors some pleasantly difficult choices).

Yes both sides bowling is a lot better than their batting.

However I think Australia probably have an advantage in batting. Warner is clearly the best opener in both sides and Khawaja is an advantage at number 3. Smith is the best batsman in the two sides, Root is not quite at his level.

England do not have an established opener or a number 3, I do not rate Butler at 5 and Stokes is not really specialist batsman quality either if he bats 6. It is going to be very tough to almost build a complete batting lineup for the Ashes.

With the first A game on Thursday, do Aus have enough players to field a side?
With Turner electing shoulder surgery and K Richardson and Mmarsh currently with the WC squad, there are only 11 players left in the squad.

Travis Head, Matthew Wade, Will Pucovski, Peter Handscomb, D'Arcy Short, Kurtis Patterson, Ashton Agar, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott

Mitch marsh could be brought in if things are desperate. He's over there now not as a part of a squad. Also there's Pattinson and Siddle over there playing county.

M Marsh is part of both A squads but is currently WC cover for Stoinis. Pattinson is already in A squad mentioned above.

Siddle and Labuschagne likely additions if needed
