South Africa team selection

I know this goes a little against the grain here on CW, but right now I don't care about the test team. Unless a miracle happens and we manage to pull it together, it's going to be yet another ICC tournament that we've failed at.

We need to take a leaf out of England's book and start building towards the next World Cup as soon as this one is over. Identify a strategy and find the players who can implement that strategy. I refuse to believe that we don't have the talent available in this country, so it's a matter of properly utilising that talent.
We saw this coming though didn't we ?

But like our SA A and SA U19 performances in recent times despite the talent we are not winning enough games of cricket. Something somewhere has gone wrong.

Duminy. Shift the order down, Faf at 4 van der Dussen at 5 & Miller at 6. I know Miller came in at 4 yesterday but I prefer him as a finisher
I`m not saying you are wrong, but Miller has not done anything either. And Duminy is the only batsmen that had a decent S/R trying to get that total yesterday. Millers end of innings power can often become a dud.

I suspect it may be Markram, though. I hope not.

Should Pretorius come in for Morris? I know he's not particularly threatening with the ball but he's less likely to leak runs and might be the lesser of two evils.

I would rather it was Morris, but it is a bit like shooting yourself in the left foot or right foot.

Maybe neither? Just play an extra bat and get Duminy and Markram through ten overs. Can't be worse could it?

We should honestly just bring in Shamsi. I have no faith in the bowling of Pretorius or Morris.

The rose bowl is pretty flat. Not sure extra pace on the ball will help. Shamsi also has international concerns but might as well play him even if against India.

Been doing some thinking. I reckon I would really like this to be how we balance our side moving forward. We get strength in depth on bowling and batting. Obviously well ahead of time but I am starting to think we need guys at 6/7/8 capable of coming in and clearing the ropes but also playing innings of substance if required. It allows us to go hard. We still have guys at 9 capable of batting in Jansen and Coetzee but are still frontline bowlers and Jansen would bring left-arm variation.

1. QdK
2. Breetzke
3. Markram
4. Rassie/van Tonder
5. Qeshile/Makwetu
6. Mulder
7. Parsons
8. Phehlukwayo
9. M.Jansen/Coetzee
10. Rabada/Nortje
11. Ngidi/Dupavillon

Obviously Rickelton & J.Malan in the mix and until Parsons/Jansen/Coetzee are ready we may just have to bite the bullett and lessen the batting with Fortuin/Maharaj and rotate Lungi, KG, Dupav and Nortje with 3 of them playing.

I really wanted a slow-left-armer there. Linde/Maharaj/Fortuin/Smuts :D
Smuts in place of Duminy would be great. Know Smuts is a bit of a hack but he is an accomplished hack and great lower order hitter, or even open if wanted.

Who do you think has the higher potential between Makwetu and Qeshile?

A little left field but what about QDK at 3/4? I notice he seems to be forcing the pace opening more recently and looks more comfortable at the 10+ over mark, when he becomes more measured. Breetke and Markram could be a good opening partnership. Obviously lose left-right combination.

You see Jimmy Cook's other son Ryan Cook is their fielding coach ? He did a lot of work with KES cricket like Jimmy still does (private coach & no surprise Gauteng always produced the best batting talent for a while now).
Maybe steal the entire Bangladesh coaching staff and get Steve Rhodes in?

Makwetu looks a limited overs players only for me. Some of those innings he played in the u19 CWC were so damn impressive. Power mixed in with finesse. Sweeps, reverse sweeps - he looked like the modern day #5 or #6 limited overs players who could play 360 but still had a good enough tecnhique to get him through which probably someone like Miller has lacked. It is still to relate to senior cricket but convinced with what I saw it will come good just like Breetzke in that sense. I compare Breetzke to Malan/Rickelton and there is no doubt Breetzke can be as aggressive as them but have more substance than them because he has a natural feel v spin and pace and can play all the shots required.

Qeshile with Breetzke, van Tonder & Mulder are the future of our test batting. Our gun world stars for me. Test and limited overs cricket.
