Pretty sure Gavaskar's famously slow ODI knock was done in response to his objection against England putting all of their fielders on the boundary from ball one. India were chasing in that match, and Gavaskar felt England's tactics in the field were un-gentlemanly & robbed India any chance of winning the game.

By extension it heralded the advent of fielding restrictions in the first 15 overs.
Brearley did that out here in 79-80 as well in one game.

That match would have also had a big influence on the introduction of fielding restrictions for sure, no doubt. ODIs evolved quite a bit in the early years as you would know mate.

Weird you'd think for proper batsmen that's just giving them a free run-a-ball with the occasional 2. I wouldn't be complaining if I were a proper batsman (I'm not)

Chappell killed in that 79 WSC series in the West Indies. 620 runs in 9 innings with 3 hundreds and 2 fifties, zero not outs. One of his dismissals was a run out too. Bowling was mostly a combination of Roberts, Croft, and Holding, with Garner coming in for the 4th game, and Daniel for the first two.

I think out here he only did it in the final over tbf, when the Windies needed a four or two to win the game. Put the keeper on the boundary too.

Is this true. In recent interviews he's given Gavaskar implies he tried his best but had no idea how to play a proper odi innings yet at the time. Which sounds like bullshit tbh.

Hey dude don’t look at me like that. It was your criteria not mine. You are right in saying Greg Chappell never faced the Lloyd side in the WI ... if you fraudulently fail to disclose the WSC series that is. And look: You did!
WSC is not international cricket . Otherwise I will also have to include 188 runs Gavaskar scored against Marshall and Hadlee at Lords.

Typical BCCI throwing its weight around when one of its players throws a tanty :p.

In all seriousness, Gavaskar is one of the best openers in history. Certainly the best opener of the 70s/80s. Not overrated at all.

It's funny because Bevan would have adored his ODI opponent putting everyone on the boundary. Would have taken them for 12 an over. Only danger would be running out of steam after the first 15 overs/150 runs. Would have ruined modern batsmen though. 6 and out for the lot of them. None of them know how to run 2s any more and few know how to take a single without almost getting run out.

Wayne Daniel’s biggest contribution to Australian cricket wasn’t hitting Malone for six in WSC to win a one dayer, it was cutting a ****ing swathe through the female population of the lower north shore when he played for Mosman in the 80s.

Woah. That's one of the most star studded field of players I've ever seen. Is there any footage of this out there? Would be gold.

Edit: Seems this is the same match in which that famous Harper runout of Gooch happened. Might be the only footage of that game that's available.

There’s some on YouTube. Think Rob May have uploaded.

MCC was clever in choosing Marshall for their side

Tbh it is a bit silly to compare an exhibition game to genuinely competitive international cricket. A lot of half-assing generally goes on in exhibition games.
