State Captain
Henry Nicholls with a better ODI avg than Baz, Cairns, McMillan, Harris, Greatbatch... and many many more.

Funny.

lucky we've got Classic Williamson and Classic Taylor then

(and so far avoided the Classic Williamson-Taylor runout)
We has Classic Taylor first runs IIRC

I like WASP. People laugh about how it fluctuates but that's not because it's a poor indicator it's because it's an excellent indicator of how intense ODI cricket can be. It's a great advertisement for the sport IMO.

Southee > Bracewell

I do still rate Southee as one of our best ODI bowlers. But man, he seems to have a serious issue with shifting from red ball to white ball cricket these days. I'm sure come the India series Southee will probably look much more the part, but it definitely makes him a liability for a world cup.
He’s been rubbish in one day cricket for years, he’s not just going to turn it on when he hasn’t shown he’s capable of that in about four years.

The problem for Southee is that he’s around 130k these days, which in one day cricket is just fodder on flat pitches and the white ball barely swinging. When he was up around 137-142 he was excellent (if not a little inconsistent). He really shouldn’t be anywhere near a limited overs NZ team

I like it too, I look at the winning percentage as how often sides will get home from that position (which is think it is, with a par score thrown in somehow or other) which is just interesting in itself.

As disappointing as it is to see Williamson depart for yet another 50 Nicholls yet again showing he can bat in this format and score at a decent rate. There's no reason why he can't make no.5 his own. Here's hoping two things

1. Rosco gets a big 100
2. He doesn't get run out and doesn't run anyone else out as well...

Is this Nicholls most fluent ODI innings ever? I'm not able to watch but he seems to have maintained control and a high tempo the whole innings - something he's done in List A but never at international level iirc.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
His and Williamson's SR's both a bit ordinary though. Worried that'll be the difference between us and the likes of India and England at the World Cup.
They're builders and not bashers though. We want the #1 and #2 to have high SRs, as well as the 5, 6 and 7.

New Zealand have a few problems that WILL haunt them in the world cup from my guesses.

1) The guptill munro combo is just not working, as attractive as it looks on paper. Oh well, not too many options there.

2) Middle overs bowling is mediocre, against the likes of england, India, south africa, i do not see sodhi and neesham either taking wickets, or containing. At least coriander-son had a knack of picking wickets.

3) Southee. Enough said. That pest will not go away. He's got the limited overs gig until he gets bored himself and hangs it up. I have given up faith in the selectors dropping him. Its just not gonna happen. Hopefully the other 4 bowlers click to make up for it.

4) This is something I could see NZ getting better at but still a bit of an issue, not enough power players who bat deep. Neesham is unproven against quality, lets see how he does...he has shown promise though. Santner will need to click again after a longggg lay off. De grandhomme is a beast, needs to find consistency, too often is he a hit and miss type. I don't see Latham and nicholls being able to alternate gears among acceleration and accumulation against quaality bowling.

My expectations are high and I mention competing with top quality sides often, which is an indicator of how good we are. But goddamit, I want us to steal the show and take this WC....the final of the last cwc has left a burning hole.

We do have weaknesses, most of which have been around a while, which makes my expectations only mid-tier for the World Cup - feel like we're 4th or 5th best side.

However I do have some cautious optimism that some of our weaknesses are being addressed - Neesham emerging, Santner batting better, Ferguson now our number 2 seamer, Seifert and Nicholls improving a little. We'll have to wait until the India series, which will be challenging, to get a better bearing on these things.
