From early in the innings Markram looked like Markram of last summer. Just the positive body language and getting himself into better positions.

During Sri Lanka and even in between the dazzling strokes from time to time in ODIs and MSL he looked panicked and not someone in total control which is what made him so impressive last summer and before.

Yes, he still would be compared to Philander. This particular Newlands pitch is not one which suits Philander's kind of bowling.

Yes, he still would be compared to Philander. This particular Newlands pitch is not one which suits Philander's kind of bowling.

It suits Philanders bowling just fine... he went past the outside edge number of times etc. Abbas is not used to looking for the edge he bowls more stump to stump, which is not as suitable for a pitch with bounce. And Abbas did not start bad, he jagged it off the seam a number of times early on.

Remains to be seen. The number of matches he's played is still in the teens. I don't think he played in the practice match either.
