*Official* Pakistan v New Zealand in the UAE 2018

Finding adequate cover for first choice players (Santner and Guptill in this case) has always been a problem. This was a real missed opportunity however for fringe or recently-established players - CdG, Seifert, Phillips, Chapman (though he only got one game), given that the starting lineups very rarely deviate from the first choice XI (see Southee's precedece over Henry in the ODI side whenever available).

This really was a disappointing loss. If you play well and lose by small margins that's fine. T20 does go both ways but any game you lose without batting 20 overs is not a great show. Any margin over 20 runs means one of the team hasn't had a chance.
Watched NZ's innings, was indeed disappointing. KW was batting quite beautifully and handling the spinners with ease, really showing glimpses of his IPL form and Phillips was just starting to get comfortable. Most sides would back themselves to win from there (9 an over off the last 8 with 8 wickets in hand). But then it's a bit of a confused middle order at this point and these sorts of things happen when you're on a losing streak. Also Pakistan have just about the perfect T20 attack at the moment.

Yeah definitely feel there's a bit too much pessimism around. Phillips finally started to look like his CPL form towards the end of his innings, kid is only 21, I hope they stick with him because the younger these players get exposed to international level cricket the better they will be in the long term.

Hate to say it but I think CdG is a liability in T20 atm, although I do like their willingness to shift him around the order. Hoping to see Corey bowl a bit more because I definitely think he could be a number 6 for the WC. Wish Ferguson had played all 3 games, Milne showed glimmers of brilliance but thought Ferguson bowled pretty well this morning.

ODI's are still a completely different beast to T20I's and I feel like our team is a bit more settled there, although I still don't really rate Nicholls at 6. Rather see Anderson at 6 and CdG at 7.

Agree with this. I recall watching McCullum in his first couple of international series in Australia and then against England in early 2002. Couldn't look past the rawness and didn't imagine he'd make it in internationals at all. Might be a similar story with Phillips and I wouldn't mind if they gave him enough chances to find out.

We've won 1 T20 out of the last 10.

Haven't won an away T20 series in more than 5 years.

We've lost 5 series out of our lost 7, the two wins came against the WI and Bangladesh at home.

It's definitely premature, but I can't help but feel this is our fate unless the next crop are much better than the likes of Phillips, Chapman, Anderson, CdG etc. But there doesn't appear to be anyone coming through at the domestic level and the ones who have shone have only disappointed. They could definitely improve, but with what they've shown so far potential wise, I'm not very hopeful.
There's no reason for anyone to give a **** about T20 series' - not the players, not us as fans, and hardly even NZC. Who won the last T20 World event? I can't remember. I couldn't care less. It's like rugby league - the international product is almost meaningless, shoehorned in around the main products (State of Origin and NRL). But T20 internationals are even more meaningless because they have no historical relevance.

the last T20 i remember was our full strength team doing their usual thing and pathetically wilting when faced with some random australians.

once again it was a lesson in humility, the great reminder that our great nation is still mortal. the yin to the all black and dixon/SVG/mclaughlin yang

Lol the tri series! I forgot all about that! And the other day I was thinking about the NZ England game in Wellington which I have very vague memories of attending, because someone mentioned it was apparently Williamson’s last decent score in a Blackcaps 20-20.

I do love the super smash, partially because it’s the only domestic cricket we get to see on tv, and also it’s the easiest to attend (and the only one that gets a crowd), but I don’t think I’d care if NZ lost its next 400 consecutive t20 internationals.

I agree, I remember every year's ford trophy, super smash and plunkett shield winners. I remember one day international series' to a certain extent and test series absolutely but t20 international games hasn't registered with me. I wouldn't be able to tell when they last played prior to Pakistan series without one reminding. Wonder why that is so? Is it because the bilateral ODI series' means nothing? Doesn't sound like the international T20s took off.

I think my T20 interest peaked around the time McCullum was ramping Tait, Nannes, Harris, etc. for six back in 2010 or thereabouts. A lot of the '90s legends were still around in the scene and we were only 2-3 seasons deep into the IPL.

Injuries hampering Black caps plans

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/crick...anderson-tour-over-as-black-caps-injuries-hit

Corey Anderson is out of the tour again, this time due to heal injury.

Todd Astle is 50:50 chance and has been ruled out of the first game already. If he doesn't come all right shortly he's going to be ruled out for the rest of the tour including the test series.

George Worker, Ajaz and Lockie get a look in for the one dayers. I would have thought William Young would have been given a go with the kind of form he's in but Worker has been quite consistent over the years so not a bad pick.

1. Colin Munro
2. George Worker
3. Kane Williamson (captain)
4. Ross Taylor
5. Tom Latham+
6. Henry Nicholls
7. Colin de Grandhomme
8. Matt Henry
9. Ish Sodhi
10.Trent Boult
11. Lockie Ferguson

They'll probably pick Southee though.

What do you mean probably? He'll be there. Nicholls at 6 is still not the future, but that will be the batting line up.

i think there's hope, but i've also always been a latham keeper and #5 skeptic so if we must play him then he should open imo. 3 players for 2 spots makes it tricky though.

i'm not optimistic for worker but he is a valuable batsman in List A

nicholls at #6 is the least of our worries

i still think guptill/latham should be our openers for the WC
Well considering we’ve lacked finishing power for a good 18-24 months now and it’s our number one weakness I’d say it’s a big worry. Nicholls isn’t a number six in the modern game of ODI. We’re going to a World Cup in less than 12 months time and it will be 350 plays 350. He has no chance of playing a 80 off 40 ball knock. Solid enough cricketer but just no what we need at six.

I wouldn't even have him in the squad at this point. Dude's been coasting with a 50 odd average for years. Adam Milne is made of glass but when he's fit and around - there's no reason he shouldn't be ahead of Southee.

Boult, Ferguson, Henry, Milne should be the quicks we pick from.

Todd sucked in the A 'unofficial test' unfortunately.

NZC's wheels are falling off this tour so far, tbh.

But even then, he is the only player qualified to bat 8 in Santner's absence.

Sodhi and Patel are spuds with the bat (and Sodhi in tests with ball too).

Time to shine Ajaz.[/quote]

Neesham is my dark horse for that number six position. Worker v Munro to open with Guptill, Nicholls the back up batsman. Bowling who knows, Southee shouldn’t be anywhere near the team. Boult, Henry, Ferguson and Milne. Wouldn’t mind see Jamieson and Kuggs with a few games under their belts this summer.
