Alastair Cook Retires from International Cricket

Furball

Evil Scotsman
Legend.

It's a real shame he's essentially going because he's not up to it anymore instead of because he can't be bothered. He deserved much better than that.

right time for him to go but has been an absolute legend for England..the type of player who you knew that if you don't get him early, he will make you regret it..

Weirdly my most vivid memory about his peak was how he was regularly going in the top 3 picks in cpl/cwpl/whatever drafts. Bloke was unstoppable back then and you could understand why people thought he had a great chance of breaking aggregate records.

What stands out in the articles and tributes about him is that he seemed to treat everyone the same - with respect and dignity. Just a genuinely nice and good man. No-one who seems to have met him on a personal or professional level seems to have a bad word about him. Never in trouble on or off the field.

And yet the vitriol that he seems to get from a minority on social media is amazing.

****wits all of them. If you can't appreciate what Ali Cook has achieved and stands for then you don't appreciate test cricket.

Indeed. The fact that Piers Morgan's tweets on Cook are more likely to make headlines than anything David Frith says is a disgrace to cricket journalism.

I don't want the Chef to retire, I know nothing but Cook opening up for England, it's going to be so strange :(
Ha, it feels weirder when you think that you can go back to the previous century and one of Cook, Strauss, Trescothick and Vaughan were there. We always had one class opener, now we have none.

I've been thinking about this and can only think of Ronnie O'Sullivan as a challenger so I'm inclined to call it. Any other shouts?
Two different characters I couldn’t imagine! As a proud Essex man, Cook is definitely one of our own, no matter where he was born.

always amazes me how this translates for so many as 'boring'.

boring because he wasn't a disruptive, 24 carat ****.
