Team of the 2010s

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
If you want to include an allrounder then the only player of note with a 40+ batting average and a bowling average of < 35 since 2010 is Shakib al Hasan (44.29 and 33.77).

I’d probably swap Herath for Ashwin to strengthen the tail and add more variety.

2010 to PRESENT
01. Alastair Cook
02. David Warner
03. Hashim Amla
04. Steve Smith
05. Joe Root
06. Shakib al Hasan
07. BJ Watling
08. Ravi Ashwin
09. Stuart Broad
10. Dale Steyn
11. James Anderson
Broad over Philander?

I would also consider Johnson over Anderson outside England. He also makes the idea third seamer behind Steyn and Philander.

Except he only played half the decade with results which in way scream "one of the best 3 seamers of the decade".

We've been predicting this for ages though. Amla etc yet to fall away and the decade's more than 75% over.

I reckon by 2020 the fab 4 are gong to have just as much difference between each other as they do to a few other batsmen (is the gap between Kohli and Pujara, for example, really bigger than the gap between Kohli and Smith?), but CW will probably be one of few places to bring this up while professionals just pick the fab 4 because it's obvious and because meme value. Or because what they're really doing is picking an all-formats XI like I used to like to do.

The exception will be Gob who will pick Virat-Vaughan-Amla for meme value.
Prefer Vaughan more than Virat against the newer ball so i'd have him come before Virat.

With Cook retiring I thought I'd bump it.

Cook
Warner
Williamson (c)
Smith
Kohli
Watling/De Villiers (wk) (undecided)
Shakib
Ashwin
Philander
Steyn
Anderson

2 1/2 South Africans, 2 Indians, 2 Australians, 2 Englishmen, 1 1/2 NZers, 1 Bangladeshi. It has been a pretty even decade.

Can't really find much to argue with tbh. Side seems to almost pick itself. Keeper obviously the big question mark, de Villiers deserves the spot but isn't really a great keeper, but Watling certainly doesn't deserve to be among such company but I'm not sure there's anyone better?

Still the SA team that went unbeaten away from home upto 2015.

The current Indian team could have had a shot if their away record was better, but no.

EDIT : Doh, we're talking about a team with the best players of this decade

Williamson hasn't done enough yet to displace Amla imo.

Would probably still have Swann ahead of Ashwin as well.
Hard to pick someone who only played 4 years in the decade though.

Fair point re: Amla, people forget how good he was circa 2010-13 because he's been pretty meh since the 2015 World Cup. Kane not helped by New Zealand refusing to play Tests though.

Also think Younis Khan still has a case.

Being generous to Shakib too actually. Most overrated player of the millennium. Only useful in Asia or against minnows like NZ.

I'd consider picking Jadeja or Lyon ahead of him.

For now, I think I'd go with the following team:

Cook
Warner
Sanga
Smith
Kohli
Younis
Watling (?)
Philander
Herath
Steyn
Anderson

By the end of the decade, I expect it to look like:

Cook
Warner/Azhar Ali
Williamson
Smith
Kohli
Root/Stokes
Watling, maybe
Ashwin
Cummins
Rabada
Anderson

Wicketkeeper slot the toughest to nail down what with de Kock not turning out like I thought he would. Steyn is a weird one too because if you really look at it his peak was 2007-2014 so he's only been great in this decade for around 4 years and been injured for almost the entire rest of it. You could easily make the case that Rabada has already accomplished more in this particular decade.

Edit: actually scratch that last part. Steyn has 250 wickets this decade despite 4 years of non stop injuries haha. Insane.

Shakib is there for his batting as much as his bowling. I'd rather have Herath or Yasir Shah (even with only 28 tests) than Jadeja or Lyon
