South Africa team selection

the big bambino

International Captain
I'm not sure if it was on this thread but I vaguely recall someone asking about Labuschagne quite a while ago. The response was that he was doing well enough at domestic level but may never get higher honours. Well in case people are still curious and don't know, he is now in the A side in India and made scores of 65 and 13 recently. He has 2 fc tons from earlier in the year. So he is progressing and with Smith and Warner out of the side just might be a smokey for a middle order spot in the test team. Anyway circumstances and his own improved form have improved his representative chances.

Shaun von Berg didn't promote his prospects of playing for SA on the recent tours to Sri Lanka and India.

Obviously still a whole season to play out and see where Piedt/von Berg and others are.

But I wonder if we may see Harmer re-called for India tour after the World Cup. Another fine season for Essex.

Interesting article, although personally I really don't rate Frylinck's bowling at all
He is better than I give him credit for with his mix of well disguised slower balls and stuff but yeah with you.

Number 8 is probably the highest he should bat. If he could bat 7 and be relied on I think he would definitely be in the ODI squad. His batting is also an interesting skill. He basically hits sixes behind point with cuts or slog to leg.

Isn't he just too old to be playing for the A team?
In an ordinary world I would say yes. Same with Behardien. It's not like there are loads of 20,21 year-olds on this tour to absorb from them.

But I guess with a lot of the A team gone Kolpak , Proteas retiring these were the best performing players last season in domestic. A lot of that had to do with our system (quotas and having 6 sides) that just not a lot of young players could put their hand up last season because of a lack of opportunities. It was the worst domestic season in living memory for me. But that looks like it will change this season.

Could there be an element of wanting to have a look at the likes of Behardien and Frylinck ahead of the World Cup? They're obviously not long-term prospects, but you take players to the World Cup for the purpose of winning matches, not building for the future.

Definitely and the fact they were performing domestically last season. So selection for them was a formality. But maybe if there was younger talent pushing them they wouldn't be needed.

I know the focus is ODI cricket.

But looking ahead to the test summer.

Questions to be answered.

Do Amla & Faf retire after or during these 5 tests.

Are Bavuma & deBruyn good enough for a SA team looking to achieve great things

Bedingham, Hamza, Breetzke , van Tonder, Muthusamy, Mulder there are serious opportunities for 3-6 in the batting line up coming up.

Lastly, Stern needs to prove he has it still in him to keep Nvidia out the team. Competition for reserve behind Olivier will be interesting.

Elgar, Parnell, Maharaj, Steyn 4 of the overseas players for the 8 Div 1 CC teams. Good to see Dale back and he is scoring some runs. Supposedly has unfinished business at international level in this regard :)

Keshav you biscuit! Dude has really come into his own. What a find for us. Finally a spinner we can rely on.

Elgar got 75 against a very decent Essex attack of Porter, Cook, Siddle, Harmer that really set up the game for them.

Harmer has it on a string. It may not hurt us that we have Maharaj but is really honing his art at the moment and up there as best spinner in CC Div 1 again. Would love to take him to India this time next year. I saw Lancashire fans moaning about why they needed Kesh and he has shown why in these last 2 games. Quality spinner in all conditions.

Parnell. Started slowly to ok. You just want some consistency to him. Getting into his work last few games.

Steyn just rapped up the win for Hampshire but not only did he just come back he performed. Abbott with another 5-for and a hattrick yesterday evening.

Dale's latest two wickets were absolute beauties! :D
Had to laugh at Dale in an interview released the other day. Says he is 35 going on 23 and that he has a PhD in fast bowling so he won't be letting that go any time soon.

Fair enough. Physically he looks immense. I had my doubts initially, but feel that 500+ is definitely on. Getting through his last couple of months must have given him a lot of confidence - skill is obviously still there.

Also I was recently thinking, how good would it be to watch Steyn and Anderson opening the bowling? Ridiculous
