The Jake Doran thing combined with Greg Chappell's influence makes this stuff inevitable doesn't it? I'm not a fan of it but clearly it's basically expected from CA that most of these guys walk into contracts and get a chance in the professional environment straight away (as opposed to say Jackson Bird doing the U19 stuff and then being in grade cricket for years and years). it's their excuse for getting rid of the Greg Chappell intentional XI, that it's not needed anymore because they're going straight into the set-up now. it's hog wash but hey.
and nsw has legitimately been terrible at giving new blokes a chance lately

This is actually very interesting!!! I'm a critic of expending the BBL without at the very least adding the ACT in the shield for the reasons stated in the article ("The Academy is needed because Cricket NSW has up to 36 full contract slots available for its two BBL clubs but only 20 full contract slots available for the NSW Blues. Yet players not on the Blues list must still have the best opportunity to perform at BBL level."). I don't think it'll do much but at least they've acknowledged the issue

I will be looking for one of Tassies favorite sons.. James Faulkner to show somewhere near his career best this season after a terrible time with injury and form loss over the past two years.

Nick Winter was a sensation in his debut season. An imposing.34 w @19.70 from a mere 5 matches. The Canberran leftie produced prodigious swing akin to Jimmy Anderson at his best. Nick is my smokey for the 2019 Ashes.

There were murmurings a couple of years back about Patrick Page being the "next big thing". Sometimes it is not easy to overcome the pressure of expectation . If Page has come of age we will find out this season. Keep an eye out too for Peter Grant. Hashim Amla will be after the rookie quick castled him him in a CAX1 game a couple of years ago. It was one snorter of a delivery among a fine spell that asked questions of the veteran Protea batsman. Grant tho needs an injury to one of the seasoned Redback attack if he is to get the exposure to push his career to another level.

NSW Blues contracted players for 2018-19:
Mitchell Starc (CA), Pat Cummins (CA), Josh Hazlewood (CA), Nathan Lyon (CA). Ryan Gibson, Moises Henriques, Dan Hughes, Nick Larkin, Kurtis Patterson, Jason Sangha, Param Uppal, Peter Nevill, Dan Fallin, Arjun Nair, Steve O’Keefe, Will Somerville, Sean Abbott, Harry Conway, Trent Copeland, Ben Dwarshius, Mickey Edwards, Liam Hatcher, Charlie Stobo, Henry Thornton. Rookies: Jack Edwards, Jordan Gauci, Ryan Hackney, Ryan Hadley, Baxter Holt, Chad Sammut. There is some serious promise in that rookie list. have your say.
Well what can the long suffering Blues supporters expect this season? I will say more of the same.. average, middling, moderate. One of the most inconsistent Blues has been jettisoned.. in Nic Maddinson. Surprised a couple did not join him. Namely Nick Larkin and Ben Dwarhuis. Surely there is a better opener and all rounder running around in Premier Cricket.

Like, there’s a huge difference between IDing talent and properly nurturing it so it reaches its potential. Try teaching young cricketers to deal with disappointment. It’s a nightmare.

When my young bloke missed out on playing round one in Grade last year it was like his world ended, despite how many first graders and Shield players said to him, “Mate you’re 15.” And he’s not a kid who’s been cosseted with Junior rep stuff. He had to score bulk runs at club level to get there over three years. Some of the kids who’ve been IDed since under 11s are so entitled it’s ridiculous. It’s not that they can’t play or won’t nexessarily make it, it’s that they get fast tracked to the point it’s ridiculous.

Welcome to the forum btw Kris. Good to have someone new who’s interested in domestic cricket :)
Yep

The fear of not getting another bat for a few weeks teaches you to value your wicket

Money in the bank doesn’t do anything other than make you soft and entitled

This tour is looking like a total disaster. Players need some cricket under their belts if they are push for a spot on the UAE Test tour in October. Pray the monsoon stops by the time of the two tester next month.

On the subject of Jackson Bird, it does kinda surprise me he never got a real look in at NSW considering they had Scott bloody Coyte in the team around then. Batsman would genuinely be more worried facing his sister.

Real dissapointing to see the A tour ruined by weather so far.

He left for Tassie when he was about 20, and he never the sort of guy who made people sit up and watch at his obvious talent. Picking Coyte over him is hard to justify I guess, but Coyte was quicker than him and outperforming him in grade, so there's that.

Ahh, I thought Bird only left NSW for Tassie the season he made his FC debut, learn something new everyday I guess.
I did no research when making my post so I could definitely be wrong, but my memory of it was definitely him leaving when he was 20-21. I knew who he was at the time but wasn't convinced it'd be a big loss (lol).

98% sure he made his debut for Tassie almost as soon as he arrived there, and he was like 25 when he debuted for tas. will go to MyCricket™

last played for Manly on 12th of March 2011, debuted for Tas at the start of next season, so yeah he toiled away in grade for 5 odd years after the U19 WC

CW opinions on Bird, seemingly right before the 2011 season in which he signed for Tassie (so he was 24, not 20 -- my bad):

Cameron a great get for WA. If he can stay fit I fully expect him to become the 2nd best quick in the country behind R Harris.

Bit suprised with Tassie going for Bird from NSW. Having played a bit with him and against him he's looked a good first grader but hasn't really looked like kicking on from there. Haven't seen him bowl for a few seasons now though but he might be a yard short of pace for Shield cricket. Will be interesting to see, similar sort of gamble to the Matt Day one which didn't come off.
Played with Bird quite a bit as a youngster, and he got stuck at a good club for a long time behind some very good bowlers, so didn't get the early first grade poles that other guys did. He dominated junior ranks, has a good size about him and I think he bowls just quick enough to do the business, especially at the WACA where you don't need to be full on rapid, because the deck can do the work for you.
Yeah, AWTA. To be fair it worked with Adam Maher though (or has so far anyway) and he's a similar bowler as well.
Jack closest to being on the money, other than seemingly reading the post wrong and thinking he'd gone to WA.

It's an odd example from me anyway. I dare say if a bowler similar to jackson bird came through the U19 set-up today they'd be just as likely to miss out on a contract as Jackson was back then. they might just move to a new state sooner than jackson did. who knows, they might not even make it into the U19 set-up
