With two openers playing, as well as Mathews and Chandimal available, there's only two spots available for Dhananjaya, Mendis, Kusal Perera and Roshen Silva in the middle order. Assuming Dickwella bats 7
This is assuming Chandimal is not playing. Don't think Kusal Perera will play as a pure batsman. Roshen has been bad against pace. That realistically creates a chance. And on top of that Kaushal is a #6, who was forced to open.

Would be harsh to drop Kusal Perera after what he did down the order in the last test, even if it's ultimately the right thing to do

still don't understand what Kaushal Silva has done to be omitted. He scored in the warm up game too I see. For me having him and Dimuth opening has been our most consistent opening partnership in tests for a long time..
my ideal XI:

1.Dimuth K, 2. Kaushal Silva, 3 Kusal M, 4. Chandimal, 5. Mathews, 6 DDS, 7. Dickwella, 8. Dilruwan , 9. Herath, 10. Lakmal, 11. Kumara.

Given that KS isn't in the squad, as above except Kusal M to open, DDS at 3, dickwella moves to 6 and Kusal P to come in at 7. If chandimal is banned then Roshen silva comes in for me ( if that is the case ,imo, he bats after dickwella)

He's also one of the best players of the moving ball on the island, we can't be exposing Mendis and DDS to the new ball consistently like we have been

Bloke averages 23 in his last 20 tests. I think the selectors were right to look elsewhere.

I'd love to know on what grounds you think he'd be anything but banned. Not enough proof for you that he refused to play?
If he was from another country the tampering alone would get him banned for a year. Heck even if he didn't tamper, being captain of a team that tampered would have got him a year ban. That's before even taking the whole refusing to play thing into consideration.

None of the replacements have been any better, at least Silva could occupy the crease

They are trying to make a case that it was all caused by misunderstandings and stuff

Don't think Chandimal and company will escape bans when the hearing does take place.
The best they can try to do is to reduce the severity of the punishment.

Well basically I think they are trying to argue that the ban should be reconsidered as a punishment in this case, but they are not denying the charges laid on them, ICC needs to be tough here

Andrew Fidel with a decent joke in his latest article:

It is easy to see Chandimal and du Plessis bonding over their shared enthusiasm for sweets.

"You've got it backwards, Faf. It's strepsils on the Kookaburra and mints on the Dukes."

"The real trick, Chandi, is to put it into your mouth well before you get the ball in hand."...

It is not as if it had been this great a blight on cricket. There have been only eight cases of convicted tampering in the last 12 years, du Plessis bossing the leaderboard, having committed one quarter of those offences.

Averages are important I agree, but they're not everything. As maximas said, Silva was very good at occupying the crease and also he had a good understanding of batting with DK..

What a pathetic attitude, but since some fans are still trying to deny they even tampered I'm not surprised by it.
Well management has moved on from the tampering charge, but there was also an element of poor officiating in this case, SL were given only 10 minutes warning before the day's play about the penalty, and at this stage Chandimal still denies deliberate wrong-doing.

Having said that refusing to take the field is not something the ICC wants to come anywhere close to endorsing and as such the usual punishment for this offence ought to be handed down.
