Australian Test Selection Thread 2017 - 2018

Mr. Glass
I think handscomb will play ahead of Maxwell. Khawaja probably fortunate this controversy happened since he'd be under huge pressure otherwise.

Hope Renners and Burns go large and guide us to victory.
Will be poor form to play the messenger who was part of the fiasco. I think they'll play Maxwell.

Now just imagine if gorgeous George had have been able to declare when he wanted to and Paine didn't score his half century at exactly the right time.

Team has been blown up

Only thing left is to decide whether they go full nuclear and virtually start again

This is rather concerning tstl. I just can't see who's going to score consistent runs without Smith and Warner. At least in the bad old days around 2010 we still had Hussey.

Start over. Quite apart from the off-field stuff, the on-field failings are old, repeated, and involve many of these players, and have only been covered up by a generational streak of form by one player.

Start over with who? The shield didn't exactly turn up any exceptional performances. At least the bowling looks reasonable despite Starc's oh-so-predictable injury.

If you start over ignoring Test performances, incumbency etc then you end up with mostly the same guys who finished on this tour anyway. You might end up dropping Paine but obviously that would be a less than stellar idea given what actually did happen in this series.

Tbf by "start over" I mean "think about moving on Marsh and Khawaja". Obviously I don't mean "drop everyone". Renshaw, Maxwell, MMarsh, Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc, Lyon is still the nucleus of a decent side if the batsmen get settled. And obviously in a year's time there's a reasonably handy addition.

Really by "start over" I mean approach and mentality rather than personnel. For example, batting out a draw is actually a good thing.

Khawaja is an awful player of spin and more importantly, hasn’t improved at all

Handscomb’s technique is shot

SMarsh is too old to be picked on potential

MMarsh is not a test 6

None of those guys should play for Australia again in tests for the foreseeable future

A bit harsh to move him on given that two Tests ago he was the one batsman in form

Against a very impotent bowling attack on concrete pitches though. I think he'll be fine against the Indians though.

I wonder what our pitches will be like? Won't be able to rely on batting the opposition out of the match considering the relative strength of India's batting now.
