Lol Hadn't even notice Chatfield there. I'd stopped at seeing Jeremy Coney ahead of Chris Cairns.

Chats was one of the great ODI bowlers of his era mind, with 140 wickets @ 25 & ER of 3.57, so clearly made the list purely off his bowling exploits.

His bowling rating got up to 892 - 6th in the all-time bowling ratings. I've no idea why his batting rating got as high as it did (about 350). I do have some doubts about the ratings for ODIs, with the top 7 in the "peak ratings" list all being from the 80s and 90s.

An interesting question would be who had the most time at #2, either as a bowler or a batsman, without ever being #1.

Can u also post the list of test batsmen and bowlers who spent most of their career above 800 rankings points in batting or bowling department ? It would be very helpful.

That list isn't too kind on modern players who didn't have to wait about 2 years for their next test.

Bradman, Hobbs, Headley, Hammond get there primarily because of the world wars, right? Not saying they wouldn't have been there otherwise.

Starfighter

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Is there really a good way of accounting for elapsed time between matches? You could say 'oh take the wars out' but that would be unfair on those players when other players take breaks like, say, Boycott's mid career retirement, or Bob Simpson's comeback. I'd say maybe the number of matches above 800 is a better indicator but that favours recent players who have played more matches.

Seems like a good list to me? Swap out a couple of names on each list and you could easily claim this as top 25 of all time in each discipline.

Most notable absence in my eyes is Wasim, even though I think he's a bit overated.

Batting : Sunil Gavaskar and Greg Chappell.

Bolo

Wasn't Gavaskar up and down a lot? Would explain his absence.

I have it in mind that Chappell was one of the most consistent batsman around, but I'm not really sure.

Chappell (and Lillee) would have reduced ratings due to WSC, as your rating drops for every match you miss. So they would have had to build there 1977 rating up again after 1979

Also maybe of interest: the batsmen and bowlers who were rated #1 by the widest margins. Lists give the #1 player, margin, date achieved, #2 player at the time and their ratings.

Lara had just scored 26, 44, 2, 1, 2, 2 in a series in Australia, and dropped over 100 rating points.

If you look at the top 20 #1s by ratio between 1st and 2nd (instead of by gap), you get similar lists but even more favouring early players (Bannerman and Spofforth go to the top).

Amazing job, AndrewB! Very impressive work collating all this data and then analysing it to produce such pertinent stats.

Take the gap of that Bradman one that is third or so on your list. In reality that gap is the biggest because those couple of points to get from, say, 958 to 960 are an absurd amount of runs. Neither ratio nor number express who has the largest gap with an exponential scale. Until you remove the exponent, I don't think you can do this.

As Zebra says, it's mighty fine work, though.

AndrewB

I see what you mean.
Not sure if there's any mathematical validity to it, but if you look at the gap for 1000/(1000-rating), rather than rating, you get a maybe more convincing list:

You are doing a fabulous job. You should start ur own thread only for analysis realated to ICC ratings.

Request: Both Sehwag and Gilchrist have identical ODI record. Can u tell me who spent more matches or days above 650 ICC batting rating in ODI. Just want to check who was more consistent.
