***Official*** 2nd Test at Adelaide

Saker has, based on what he saw happen once England bowled. He appears to be saying in hindsight they may have got it wrong. Something you don't have when you make the decision.
It's not just about whether the ball is hooping around at night though (which it hasn't been so much this Test), it's that England were on their knees, and by not enforcing we not only didn't go in for the kill but we also allowed them an immediate shot at our weakest link (our batting) and in doing so opened up to them an improbable path back into the game.

In a more general sense and not necessarily applicable in this Test, not enforcing opens up the conundrum of when to declare, and also more opens up the possibility of a draw

By enforcing, the prospects of a draw are generally speaking much less
I'm wary of relying purely on statistics, but that's not true at all, at leat according to the one person I've seen look at the issue (Charles Davis). In matches going from the mid nineties to 2014 (and excluding Bang and Zim) or so teams enforcing are 10% less likely to win despite having on average a significantly larger lead, and not enforcing is more successful up to last session on the third day. Another case of perception being different to reality then.

Of course this decision had special conditions with the ball hooping around under lights, but I think our stupid bowling at the tail was the real problem.

My comments were around the draw though, not on winning.

The only loss in the relevant set of matches was Kolkata '01. Follow on = higher chance of draw.

Again in think that this match is unusual though.

Cool, useful info, and as you say sits at odds with the general expectation

Anyway, looking at the odds Australia @ $1.35 , and England @ $3.25

Only saw the first session but kudos to the Poms on standing up. Too much to expect but them taking this to the wire would be great. Losing at the end of course.

Surely England are in the box seat?? They've got two sessions of good light to make the majority of runs and their best batsman is already pushing towards a century. Australia still has 18 overs before the new ball and no reviews left.

5th day pitch. 180 runs. 6 wickets. Lyon and Cummins bowling beautifully.

Aus are a 5 to 1 fav for me. And it's game over if Root gets under 100

i'm getting the real vibe of england folding early and i dang hope so

of course this steaming hot take means they'll compete but w/e

Jimmy boasting about sledging Smith, saying it helped get him out early, despite the fact he labelled the Australian team bullies shortly before the game. Blatant hypocrisy, absolutely classless.

What do we think about this? I do think it was a bit **** of Saker to do that while the game was still going. Back your captain in.
Yeah completely agree. You lose nothing by going with "we'll be reviewing all decisions taken in the test once it's complete" or words to that effect. Or better yet, just say "we made the best decision we could at the time". There's still a match on ffs.

It's too early to even say. If England get skittled for 40 today with the ball doing all sorts of crap then not batting last looks a much better decision.
