Regardless of result of this test Handscomb has to go as does Vince. Both completely out of their depth and looked walking wickets in this game.

Makes you wonder whether it was anything to do with cricket, wouldn’t normally see Root pointing his bat at someone if it’s just the usual chirp. Normally just giggles at them.

Handjob and Pain shouldnt be talking to Root. They should be worrying about their insurmountable lack of ability.

Thought Vince looked ok today, it’s just the same story with him, a glorious drive here or there but a loose shot outside off stump causing his demise. If he could just be more selective in what he goes after and think about his game plan a bit more, he could nail a spot in this England side, unfortunately there’s no signs of that happening.

I can see it happening one day that an Aussie player will overstep the mark when they sledge and an opposition player will bring up Hughes which would be horrible but in the heat of the moment stupid things happen and I fear it may.

To be fair they were probably just trying to unsettle him, he was going along so serenely they probably felt that they had to try something.

You’d hope no one would resort to that!! Although if they overstepped the mark with Stokes we know what’d happen!

Handscomb is absolutely awful. Vince? I would have certainly taken his trademark 'pretty 30' last night.

I was impressed with Malan. Ponting and Vaughan were talking utter garbage about his low strike when he was stranded on 8. This is a team who keep chucking their wickets away playing gormless cross bat swipes and aimless off-stump wafts in the first three overs yet here is a guy who is soaking up pressure - pink ball, newish ball, nighttime against that excellent attack - and you couple of wankers are criticising him? He is the only lefty who seems to have any notion on how to play Lyon! !And then when he got off 8 his strike-rate increased and he got that 29. The ball he got out to was a peach so he has no blame there.

Of course but if they have said something really bad that shouldn't have been said then it is human nature to go one step further and that may be it. I hope it never happens but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Tbh I'm struggling to come up with a sledge that's more intelligent and witty than 'lol Phil Hughes is dead'. It's not something that would be easy to bring up without deliberately being a ****.

Yep. Someone said it already, but whilst Malan's results so far haven't exactly brilliant and I don't think he'll ever really make it as a test cricketer, you really can't fault him for giving it all the effort he can and I respect him a lot for that.

While the decision to not follow-on/declare will come under the microscope if Australia lose (FTR, I was undecided as to whether the decision to follow-on or not was the right one, and reckon had the rain been forecast then Australia should've targeted 500, which probably wasn't that much of a stretch the way the sides were batting and bowling), Ithink the bigger issue was Australia's play from about the second session of Day 3 onwards. I don't really blame Australia for the collapse on Night 3 - Anderson and Woakes were bowling genuine hand grenades out there - but the decision to bowl short stuff to Overton and Woakes without anything pitched up or length balls in the spell was complacent and moronic. And some of the shots played in the first session yesterday (especially by Paine, the others were at least bowlers) were pretty bad when nuckling down could well have seen Australia survive another 10-20 overs, and given Australia a larger target to defend and a newer ball under lights.

TL;DR - if Australia have played better at key moments we'd have possibly been talking about a 450-500 sort of chase, which would've at least ensured England couldn't win the game without a miracle.

Poor mans Collingwood in a way. You can see he isn't as gifted as some in the side but he really tries hard and looks desperate to succeed. You hope he does in a way but I don't think he will.

We have certainly tried worse than him though and with him having it up top it may help him get over some other deficiencies in his game when better players fail as they don't have it up top.

I liked the way Malan battled for a decent length of time, he doesn’t tend to give it away quite as easily as a Vince does. I think he could have been a little busier and ticked the strike a bit better by when a rank half volley did turn up courtesy of Starc he still had the right mindset to be able to jump on it.

I just worry whether he has got it in him to go big and get the three figures. Always looks like he puts so much in and has to work so hard to get to 50 without ever looking particularly fluent.

**** it, setting alarm for 3.30. I generally struggle to get back to sleep once awake so I’ll be so mad if we collapse in a heap

If Root is still there at tea then we will win IMO
