Australian Domestic Season 2017/18

It's a pretty big come down from the days when you had half a dozen blokes with plus 50 Shield averages and anything under 40 had you worrying about your Shield spot ain't it.

Say 03/04 when Bevan, Katich, Elliot, Law, Hodge, Watson, Love, Rogers, DHussey, MHussey, MWaugh, SWaugh, Jaques, Langer, Blewett, Cox, Lehmann all scored more than 350 runs in the shield season (as well as 18 other guys) and all bar Bevan and Lehmann (3 & 4) played 6 or more Shield matches.

Bevan, Katich, Lehmann, Langer, and Junior all averaged plus 50 in the Shield, Tugger averaged 49.69 and Ponting and Haydos were too busy with international duties to play Shield that season.

In all FC cricket Elliot averaged 47, Law 50.5, Hodge 48.8, Twatto 42.5, Love 49.9, Rogers 49.6, Dhussey 52.5, Mhussey 52.1, Jaques 48.3, Blewett 44.5, and Cox 42.7. Big step down. Every one of those guys who barely got a test or never did would be core Test players these days.
Was there actually a reason the other Hussey never got a shot? Seen maybe one reference vaguely to it here about his technique but **** me Marcus North and Adam "I literally changed stats forever" Voges still got runs.

Dussey had a perceived weakness against the short ball and then by the time there was space in the team there were younger players the selectors tried instead.

I feel like he was ripped off and should have gotten at least twenty or so tests. A player of his talent or Stuart Law's talent or Martyn Love's talent really shouldn't go to waste like they did.

Yeah. And Mark Waugh probably played 20 too many
This is a good point. We talk often about the batsmen in the 1990s/early 00s who were unlucky to miss out but who in the side in that era got too many Tests? Mark Taylor an obvious candidate but his captaincy saved him.

But Mark Waugh is the clear choice for playing too many Tests. From March 1999 till he was dropped he averaged 37 in 42 Tests. Sure he played some good innings and his fielding was a major asset, but he was lucky to last as long as he did and Oz probably missed a trick by not giving a viable younger candidate a go at this time. Waugh could’ve easily been dropped during the 1999/00 home summer when he had five single figure scores after having poor tours of the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

By the end of the 1999/00 summer he'd averaged 26.80 over his previous 14 Tests in a 12 month period. While he had a couple of decent series over the remaining 2.5 years of his career, he was hardly outstanding overall and in hindsight not moving him on at the end of that summer seemed like a missed opportunity.

Also when Mark did score runs he looked a million bucks doing it. Can make people forget a poor series when he finishes it with an effortless ton

Hussey was hurt a bit by WA prioritising Voges, North, Meuleman and a few others ahead of him in their pecking order, so having to come over to Victoria and work his way through the system.

Bertus 206 not off 220 in ones today. Must be next in line for NSW if Nev gets the test gig

He’s averaging about 120 across first grade and futures league so far this year. And he missed out in the first grade game of the year too.
