Stokes Arrested

I've never seen such stuff either, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen regular in certain areas.

I'm in a cafe in Middlesbrough right now. I can think of several places where people have died from assaults in the past few years. There was one in a shopping centre involving asylum seekers. There's one particular street I used to drive through to go to a Scrabble Club which has had at least two deaths. The nearest pub to the Scrabble Club someone died.

I can well imagine what goes on in an average night, particularly in the early hours. There are enough emergency service shows out there as well which tally with my perception.
As you specifically refer to deaths, I don't doubt that the incidents to which you refer have actually occurred, but looking at the UK as a whole I note that our murder rate is among the lowest 20% of all countries in the world and actually lower than any of the other 9 current Test playing nations except New Zealand which is almost identical..

Yeah, I don't doubt this goes on regularly in certain areas. My point was S.Kennedy has used his own narrow experience to imply this kind of behaviour is representative of a typical weekend night in most English cities. Based on my experience in various cities across the country, this simply isn't the case. It is representative of a typical weekend night in a small minority of, generally underprivileged, working class cities such as Newcastle and Middlesborough.
...Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, dodgier parts of London.

And seemingly Bristol. I'm getting pilloried and accused of lying here for saying the exact thing that chap who was at the centre of the Stokes fight basically said, “If you ever see fights you let it pass. It’s just Bristol town. You see it every night you go out. Will I get an apology from you lot I wonder? I sincerely doubt it.

It is actually one of the most topical and frequent debates about British society, the rowdiness of our late-night urban areas, ''binge-drinking'' etc. You can barely pick up a newspaper without seeing something on it! But yes, ''I'm making it all up'' apparently!

Reading couldn't be called dodgy, but there are loads of people in the town centre on weekend evenings and no shortage of work for Thames Valley's finest - rarely anything really serious and mainly handbags at ten paces sort of stuff in my not inconsiderable experience (gained by virtue of the fact I used to be a duty solicitor I hasten to add) but I can see SK's point

Unless Stokes was defending this bloke from a level of harm commensurate to that which Stokes' himself dished out, it will make no difference whatsoever.

Are you kidding? If he's convicted of a criminal offence do you really think the ECB will turn around and say "ah well, he's a convicted criminal, but hey ho, in our eyes he's still a hero?". Not a ****ing chance.

The opposite is probably more likely, even if he isn't convicted of anything (which he almost certainly should be). Think of John Terry being banned by the English FA after being found not guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.

They suspended Beefy for smoking a joint, and Gatts for having-it-off with a waitress so I suspect they'll throw the book at Stokes; also the ECB are trying to change the image of cricket ahead of this twenty20 nonsense, making it more appealing to women, children and ethnic minorities and not just the usual octogenarians (with dogs) and boozed-up lads who usually attend cricket matches in England. Stokes sort of epitomises the boozed-up lad really, although, if he was defending two homosexual chaps that could work in his favour.

The court of public opinion (UKIP elements apart) are certainly swinging round in Stokes' favour, and quite rightly too, but if you're intent on applying the law properly I'm not sure this helps him much - any half decent prosecuting counsel shouldn't have any difficulty making him look a bit of a **** under cross-examination, even if I do him a disservice and he is brighter than I give him credit for

Stokes will play in the ashes. Will get 180 hours community service to be completed after the tour, and sky high fine a grovelling apology and a front cover appearance on the next edition of Attitude

I've not been following this all that closely so what are his chances in playing in the Ashes?

Stokes got into a fight and came out on top. The 2 guys turned out to be a right pair of ***** and were obviuosly asking for it. So what, he's been punished enough already, get him on the plane and give us a better chance of turning the real convicts over
