Australian Off Season 2017

Haha that's ridiculous. He's not even making the simplistic argument of "hey South Africa just won a Test in England, we should copy them", because South Africa actually did pick a spinner. Moreover, the spinner actually contributed with six wickets (only one of which was a tailender) despite the fact that the conditions weren't in his favour and he didn't bowl amazingly.

That's just a batshit insane conclusion, frankly.

Yup, especially when you consider that Lyon has taken 19 and 16 wickets in the last two Ashes and outperformed Johnson last time around.

Those comments are especially hilarious when the current leading wicket taker of both sides this series is a spinner.

Pretty concerning that mentality when Ryan Harris is around the Oz coaching setup and was bowling coach on the SA ODI tour last year.

It doesn't seem as though Harris was actually saying anything it relation to this game though, he was just saying that Aus have a good pace attack and they might do well against England. It was the author that drew the link to the current Eng/SA Test.

Being reported that pay dispute talks have broken down again over - you guessed it - neither side willing to budge on 'revenue-sharing'.

Well, if nothing else this will mean daily articles of Oz ex-Test player saying England will get smashed in the Ashes will be put on hold for the time being.

I wonder what what happen if the Players Association came back with "we'll take even less that what you've offered in the short-term if you give it to us through a revenue-sharing model". Maybe they already have and got shot down.

They offered that a few months ago IIRC

Anyway, I found it hard to believe that they were getting close to a deal after Peever's ridiculous rant last week and so it has turned out

He needs to go immediately

I found it hard to believe they were getting close to a deal because if they did they'd have to find another excuse to not tour Bangladesh. Why give up a good excuse.

they offered 22.5% which was down on 26% but a) they wanted a review regarding some of the revenue streams that do not go into the 22.5% ("shared zero per cent of digital revenue with the players despite extensive use by CA of their efforts, appearances and attributes on its digital platform") and b) 'grassroots' had to get 22.5% too, so I think we know why they got knocked back

If the ACA drop that second thing you're really left with what this whole negotiation should be about.

The stubbornness and pig-headed mentality from both sides over "revenue-sharing" is so extreme it's quite impressive in a way.

Even though the TV broadcasters and potential new sponsors are panicking CA still seem to think any sort of revenue-sharing model is apparently a fate worse than death. The rest of the CA board must seriously be intimidated by Peever if they can't go against him on this.

Mark Taylor is in a very interesting and difficult situation currently; his main job is at Channel 9 which would have its summer schedule devastated with no Ashes this summer and yet he's on the CA board which is playing the prime role in making this a genuine possibility.

CA's publicity spin is hilarious. Now they're saying this isn't a breakdown in talks, just a misunderstanding.

Yeah, who would've guessed omitting references to "revenue-sharing" in the agreement would've upset the players when that is what this whole fight has been about?
