It's a weird way to approach batting in most circumstances IMO, because it's like you've decided before you've gone out to bat that you stand no chance at playing a long innings, and thus have absolved yourself of all blame if you fail, even if that failure ultimately is down to you and not the pitch. It's the coward's way out. Sure in some cases it's blatantly obvious that you won't bat out many deliveries because the ball is just doing too much, but it's a mentality thrown about way too frequently by batsmen who simply lack the talent and temperament to adapt.

You'll never hear guys like Smith or Pujara push that idea, for sure.
They generally only push it once they retire. Clarke was no stranger to making massive scores and batting a long time himself.

They're bowling really well though. Not like thheres a lot in it for them. Should give Maxwell and himself one each before tea.
It's a pretty decent batting wicket outside of the odd one keeping low, Australia have done fantastic to make batting look as hard as they have done.

Really should have scored more than 300 in the first dig.

For a year out of a decade long career against the worst attacks possible on pitches so dead all it took for one bowler was to look at the Adelaide pitch of 2012 to get the manflu.

Nah Clarke scored runs almost everywhere. Home, India, SA, England. Whole range of conditions.

Scored runs in Hong Kong too, which is enough to classify him as an ATG in my book.

Still a weak way of thinking tbh. Especially for the conditions here. Say it about Nagpur sure, but this pitch? Nah.

It's fairly lively with the new ball also. But yes, good batting surface today and tomorrow. This one I actually can see breaking up a decent amount on the last day or two though, unlike Ranchi. Don't know if it will ever turn a massive amount but the cracks will be a big factor.

I still think around 6 down tonight keeps Australia in the game, maybe 5 given the fairly low scoring rate. But if the Indian specialist batsmen are still in at the end of the day you'd expect a decent lead would be on the cards and third innings batting won't be that easy.

Interesting comments by Clarke about the ball doing a fair bit early and late for the quicks. Didn't see it yesterday so much and wasn't watching much first session today.

The new ball was seaming and swinging around a bit but nothing crazy. Australia bowled fantastically to make it look as dangerous as they did, hit almost perfect areas and used the short ball really well. The pitch has nice carry and the odd one isn't bouncing as much, which again helps and has been used well by the bowlers.

It's just good batting conditions and I don't mind India grinding on and on at 2.5 per over, as long as we keep batting and score somewhere in the region of 500.

If the pitch breaks up and we have cracks and footmarks forming, that will only help us out if we have a lead and keep batting till they appear.
