***Official*** England in India 2016/17

Why are you surprised that someone is called Sheldon Jackson?
The only person I've ever heard of called Sheldon is Sheldon Cooper. He's made up and American.

Would be a bizarre name in England let alone India. Then the surname Jackson isn't exactly a standard surname over there is it?

150/1 after 23. Think it's safe to say England have lost this one.

I've think I've stumbled upon the weird part of India, like you sometimes do on Youtube.

He was going at run a ball when he was at 27 too. Seems to me that he's one of those guys that just go ballistic once they get going. Could be a game changer in the middle order.

The ECB highlights of the England innings are hilarious. Starts with boundary after boundary against seamers; first two deliveries of spin and two dollied catches by Hales and Morgan.

Pant 972 runs @ 81 avg @ 107.28 sr whilst keeping wicket is a pretty insane first class season from a 19 year old, even factoring in the Jadeja triple*3 theorem of Indian first class cricket.

If the top performers from the warmups are added into the XI for the first game:

S Dhawan
A Rahane
V Kohli
M Dhoni
Y Singh
A Rayudu
R Jadeja
H Pandya
R Ashwin
K Yadav
B Kumar

Though I don't think Rayudu suits the needs of the side with the way he plays and would rather have an aggressive hitter at 6 like Raina or Pant.

Probable team:

S Dhawan
KL Rahul
V Kohli
M Dhoni
Y Singh
M Pandey/S Raina/A Rayudu/R Pant
R Jadeja
R Ashwin
A Mishra
B Kumar
U Yadav

If this series was in England my money would definitely be on the home team, but their bowling attack away in these conditions will be completely neutralised. Ball, Woakes, Stokes and Plunkett are all Fast-Medium hit the wicket bowlers who will probably sit up on these pitches. I think Willey with his skiddier trajectory might go well if he can get the ball to shape back in.

I would suggest Moeen is a bigger issue than Morgan right now. Averaging 16 with the bat and 70.5 with the ball in ODI cricket in 15 games in 2016. It looks like playing 3 formats and bat and bowling in all of them is catching up with him. Very hard to do what him and Stokes are being asked to do. Moeen is a liability at 7. He doesn't stop collapses or hang around with the in batsman enough when the team is struggling; Isn't calm under pressure in runchases; Isn't particularly a versatile hitter at the end of the innings. You look at his bowling in Bangladesh as well. He just wasn't offering a threat. He was milked with ease on wickets where you need your spinners to be making a contribution. The one thing in Moeens favour is his economy rate. Generally speaking as an ODI bowler he's kept control of the opposition. He might not take wickets but he hasn't been smashed all over the park. That's fine in England/Aus/Saetc but you need your spinners taking wickets in Asia.

There's no spot at the top of the order for Moeen which is his best position so I don't know what you do with him. No specialist spinner stands out as a repalcement in county cricket so he's lucky in that regard.

Maybe time for Dawson to get an opportunity. He's more used to batting in middle order. He isn't more explosive than Ali as a bat but he's more capeable of knocking the ball around and more reliable. He has a fine 50 over record with the bat over the last couple of years. I'd back him to do better than Moeen batting at 6 or 7 over the longterm. Not as good with the ball as Moeen but can't do much worse than Moeen has done last year. Bringing in Dawson won't solve the lack of wickettakers but it might make the batting a bit more sturdy. Dawsons problem is that he's bowled badly the couple of times he's played for England in white ball cricket.

Morgan wil get to the Champions Trophy imo unless he is absolutely terrible. Least there are credible batting replacements for him should he fall by the wayside.

meh after thinking it through I think England (and i agree with it) probably persevere with Ali until the Champions Trophy now. With only white ball cricket until then it's a good time for him to concentrate fully on white ball cricket. I can't help but feel he will never be a 6 or 7 and a change will possibly be needed after the champions trophy - but a clear run at white ball cricket should be able to tell us one way or the other whether he is good enough for that spot.
