I remember a photo of Young and Thompson after the game with their tops off or something and both of them were absolutely smashed with bruises. So if there was something dodgy about it, it sure still wasn't easy for them out there.

Yeah look I'm not saying I recall them them playing silly buggers, just how surprised I was given, what had happen in that series to date, including the first innings that those two guys (especially Thomson who had a good eye but poor technique) could chase those runs against the 2 Ws.

I don't remember W&W bowling badly, but I do remember feeling amazed (and relieved) and how much less spicy the wicket seemed in the 4th innings. My own view is that good batting in good batting conditiond had more to do with victory than corruption.
If you do recall W&W you will know they did most of their damage in the air and not off the pitch.

I know. By "spicy" I intended to mean that the sun was shining and the ball wasn't swinging - but I admit that I didn't state that very well.

Is there any actual evidence to support this?
Probably not. You're right, it's one of those apocryphal things that's become fact through repetition.

As others in this thread have pointed out though, how that test turned out was a mighty big surprise.

Nah he's just a one day tweaker. Bowls like he believes Roleof van de Merwe is the finest exponent of the art.

Has a reasonable FC batting record so maybe he could become an outright batsman in the long form, but Pakistani domestic cricket is rarely much of an indicator of test success since it's so jumbled and there's a small player pool. Plus he's not young and seems to be nailed on to spend the next couple of years as a slogging #7/8 in limited overs fixtures so his first class batting probably isn't going to get any real work.

Aravinda de Silva

Was he underrated batsman i would rank him inside the top 70 batsman of all time and i am a good judge.

In my not insignificant experience the worst judges are those who think they are good. This is because the mindset is they're so good they don't need bother to listen to the arguments that are put before them.

Turning to the question at hand Aravinda was great to watch, and nowadays is most certainly underrated - I know this because like slippy I am a good judge

Why can't he still play for SA? Couldn't SA pay out his contract for time misses, and if not, if the contract is all season or nothing, then why not pick him during the home season when county cricket is finished?

Kolpak deals bars* international cricket.

* prolly that he loses his Kolpak deal if he plays for the national team while under contract.

I've never heard a convincing explanation for why this is even allowed. Why should Kolpak deals bar him from playing for SA in December-January etc.?

I'm not sure myself but you have relocated your country. If this was a normal job you'd be utilising the social/employment/economic system of your host country. Kolpacks were not really designed as such. It is a law designed for freedom of (normal) employment. It is a loop hole that sports persons have exploited.

Abbot could have course merely signed on as a normal overseas and continued to play for S. Africa, but presumably Hants. already have filled up their overseas quota?

Really would it not be better for the ECB to increase the overseas back to two (like it was in the '70s) and clamp down on the Kolpack. It will remove the hypocrisy of the situation and allow one more player to play both for their county and nation. A lot of people moaned about the overseas players of the '70s but they stayed with their counties for years and reinvigorated the domestic game: Marshall at Hants, Viv and Gardner at Somerset.

Some of them got through through British passports (Greenridge) and residency (Clive Lloyd I believe), playing in the northern leagues, mind. I think this was how Warwickshire managed to play four West Indians (Kanhai etc). So it is not has if loopholes are a new thing.

...isn't the point of using the Kolpak Ruling as a loophole that the ECB can't clamp down on it?
