Can RSA become like the new west indies (80s edition)? Back then WI had a very good borderline great batting lineup that would regularly put up middling scores of between 300 and 400. Actually there were many times they got sub 300 scores, but thanks to their outstanding pace attack, they'd turn around and shoot out teams for sub 200, make another 200 odd in the 2nd innings and set a 300+ target.

Assuming RSA get Steyn back (soon), I could see them going down this road. If Philander, Rabada, Abott and Steyn are your best bowlers then play them. Use a Duminy or somebody else for spin. Me personally, I'm excited at this prospect.

Getting overexcited?

Steyn won't last forever. And it seems a bit odd to say the other three are in the league of Roberts, Holding & Garner (assuming Steyn is their MM).

Otherwise, I do agree going in with 4 paceman might me a good idea more often than not.

De kock shouldn't bat in the top 4 but surely he has to move up to 5 or 6. His going to be a to be one of the worlds top 10 batsmen if he isn't already. Such a waste, he's going to end up not out more often than not or throwing his wicket away batting with the tail

It was a question not a statement...

Agreed with de Kock moving up the order. Duminy/Bavuma has to move down.

Elgar
Cook
Amla
ABdV
Faf
QdK
Duminy/Bavuma

Not too high up. He is just too good to be a lower order bat. Different with gilchrist as the 6 batsmen coming in before him all had 45+ averages. There are currently 3 in s.a's top 6 with sub 40 bavuma, Elgar and duminy

The benefit of batting QdK at 7 is that if he does get stuck batting with the tail, he's probably the batsman best suited to that role.

No harm in him staying at 7 while he further acclimatises to test cricket. I'd imagine he'll gradually move up the order as he gets a little older.

He has the gloves also, so it's probably better to keep things the way they are. It's working well right now.

I may be attempting to read to much into something that with not a lot of meaning behind it, but I do find Dean Elgar's test batting record slightly odd. By the look of his past figures it looks like he can often struggle to get going but tends to kick on fairly well after getting a start, which is fair enough and he's hardly the only batsman ever to be like this. I'm more curious as to if there's a particular reason that he's yet to make a really big score - out of 6 tons, you might well expect one to be 150+. Maybe someone who knows more about his first-class career would know if it's just generally a thing with him - I can see that he's scored a 268 but don't know how much of an outlier that was? Is it just a case of it being a matter of time before he gets a big test hundred, as I know the circumstances of at least a couple that he's got so far have meant he just hasn't got the chance to take them further.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, this isn't meant to a criticism of this aspect of his game, I like him and was impressed by his performance today.

From his many FC hundreds he does have a decent percentage ito kicking on and getting big one's so it is a bit odd that he hasn't got more than 129 out of his 6 hundreds.

When he was about 20 he got 225 for the Eagles/Knights and then got that 268 batting with Rilee Rossouw. Definitely are a few others examples of 160's, 170's & 180's so can't quite put a finger on it.

I say good on the South Africans for producing green tops. It's not like the sub continent teams produce visitor friendly wickets.

ICC should really try moving towards allowing away teams to have the choice of batting or bowling first. Scary to think what our Bowling attack would have done yesterday had we bowled first. Same goes for teams touring Lanka and India.
