South African Domestic Season 2016/17

Does this mean they can't be picked for the Proteas for the duration of their contracts? Van Zyl could still have a role for the Proteas. Even more so than Harmer.

No the contract requires 12 months committment 2 the county, and precludes players from representing their native country,.
Sad but true an indictment on the county system.

Wow massive news. There is no doubt he is a better player than he showed at test level. He was messed around with.

Disagree. Sure he was asked to open when he isn’t an opener but other players have done the same, people are asking Bavuma to do it now that despite he actually scoring runs in the middle order, and when van Zyl did bat in the middle order he only scored runs against the West Indies. Moreover, he would be in Australia now if he scored some runs against NZ but he didn’t and he looked awful. 12 test matches, 17 innings, and one score over fifty. Not good enough.

These are the guys that will still play domestically.

Richard Levi - Northants
Stiaan van Zyl - Sussex
Rory Kleinveldt - Northants
Colin Ingram - Glamorgan
Colin Ackermann - Leicestershire
Simon Harmer - Essex

Like you say Brock, could be more like the above coming. Guess guys like Hardus Viljoen, Marchant de Lange, David Wiese, Heino Kuhn possibly.

Overseas player

Imran Tahir - Derbyshire
Guys like Wiese and de Lange can get CPL contracts, so a few weeks there every year are better than long-term county deals and CSA can give them the clearance and still keep them in the fold. There was some talk before he debuted that Hardus Viljoen may go to NZ but with Steyn's injury, there is going to be opportunities for these quicks to put there hands up and get some game time this season.

I'm more than happy with the current situation.

But I believe he is a better player than he showed. He has been making runs consistently from 19 years of age to about 18-24 months ago not only in franchise cricket but also for SA 'A' teams in Australia and Asia.

If you asked cricket experts in SA who have watched him the majority have been applauding him for years. Guys like Wessels, Ford, Ackerman, Conrad , B.Procter etc He is definitely a person held in high regard domestically as well.

My weakness with him was always his timid nature and I think opening and failing like he did after started well in the middle order didn't do him much good mentally and it shows since he has gone back to domestic cricket that he hasn't dominated as much as he normally has done.

This move to Sussex was best for all concerned.

Possibly but we mustn't forget that Wiese, Morris and Viljoen all had county stints last season & I am sure they enjoyed it.

Viljoen did get a massive pay rise to stay at the Lions though and Morris is obviously in the SA set-up at the moment.

But that route is probably the most likely for them.

He just didn't look the part. Not just the batting but I remember him shelling a few catches and as you say he seemed pretty timid. Compare that to Rossouw who seems far more comfortable, has that bit of arrogance about him and you are excited to see him play.

I dunno Seam Up.Counties don't want 2 develop players these days, they want solid pros.
S Africa has always been a place England raid and Australia.
Their are a lot less irish and Scottish players playing county cricket atm,so maybe they filling this quota with S Africans.
The fact of Brexit, has its effect,it hasn't come in2 place until their is a vote in parliament, once this is done the Eu and Kolpak treaties become invalid,so they are rushing in and getting what they can before its too late.
It does say a lot that Harmer and Van Zyl less than 12 months ago were playing for S Africa.Says they don't believe in the system anymore.

Only in a few years time in the case of Morris as he has a multi-million dollar IPL contract.

After a little thought ,it is probably the best move for him. Van Zyl has fallen way behind in the reserve batsman stakes at the moment. With Rilee and De Bruyn waiting in the wings and a returning AB I don't see where he could fit in for the near future. Especially as he won't want to open again.

I like Harmer, but he is probably 4th choice spinner at the moment in our Test team. I just hope they aren't lost to SA cricket completely. It would be good to have them play against the up and comers domestically.

The way Markram has started his franchise career I wouldn't be surprised if Van Zyl has slipped behind him too.

Yeah, it strengthens our cricket to have these old pros like Harmer etc. plying their trade.

To be honest Van Zyl struck me as being soft. At times it appeared like he didn't believe he was good enough to be there. Contrast this with Bavuma and Russouw and it becomes apparent why his days were numbered. Look at the personalities of the guys he's up against, guys like De Bruyn, Markram, Russouw
And. Bavuma, he doesn't give that confidence to suggest he can step up his game. Lovely guy but as a test cricketer? I'm not convinced.

I knew there was some weird **** going on when he left Lancashire before the last game and surprisingly said he wouldn't be returning.

Then didn't even get a 4-day game or two for the Lions.

Great news that we stamping out any hint of corruption.

Who do the little ****s think they are : Bodi, Tsolekile, Matshikwe, Symes and Virus can all go and rot in shame.

Patrick Kruger looks a find here for a limited overs top-order bat. Crisp striking at the Wanderers.

Was hoping to see de Bruyn. Is he injured? Miller just dropped a dolly there - de Lange should have had 2 in the first over. Jason Smith with helmet on looks like Robbie P and Richard Levi is huge.

Yeah bleak about Theunis. Supposedly just precautionery.

There is no way Dillon du Preez bowled faster than Merchant in that opening spell that the speed gun is claiming.

The Bear was as big as I've seen him. Must be some of those Melton Mowbray pies & a pint he enjoyed while over at Northants.

Not the greatest of games that. Not much quality on display though de Lange looked a step above and the Knights seem a well-organized and happy unit. Decent bench cover considering they were missing de Bruyn and Olivier.
