Le sigh. He really is a modern day Fleming, isn't he? I mean, 3 50's in 3 tests from one of our openers is nothing to be sneezed at, but it's getting towards meme territory at this point.

Virat Kohli (c)
Kohli's thrown the gauntlet at KW with (a) his double ton, and (b) his superior intestines and colon by not falling sick for the second test.

Can KW respond.

I'm gonna go all Blocky on it and say that I was saying this 12 or more months ago - he is clearly lacking in mental application. Did the same in County Cricket, done the same throughout his Test career. Bloody frustrating watching a guy who clearly has the right technique to be the Test opener we need - and those are like hen's teeth - only for him to throw away so many starts after he's done the hard work. And it's contributing to our lacklustre performances in 2016, as much as it's slightly harsh to say a guy who makes 50s opening for NZ is doing so. But he is, if he kicked on to even 100-120s, we'd be making 350-400 much more regularly against good sides.

It's not good enough, is it?

The guy is in the same team as KW - someone who emphatically addresses his flaws and makes them strengths.

Surely he and Mcmillan have identified the problem.

Or is everyone too busy trying to fix the unfixable Guptill? Lol jk I'm not really finding a way to blame this on Guptill. Just a bit perturbed by the coaching and mostly Latham himself.

Reckon McMillans reign as batting coach has been pretty lacklustre.

The one positive I can see from Guptill making a hundred is it would totally invalidate Kohli's runs, rendering further proof of his complete lack of class

Absolutely not good enough. Little bit different than Kane I think, who is so far ahead of Tom in terms of mental strength that it's not really a comparison. As I said, it feels harsh and the guy doesn't have a horrendous conversion rate (or not as bad as Fleming's) but it's much more unforgivable for a guy to do all the hard work, get past 30-40-50 and get out - and with Tom it never feels like it's ever in the same way. It's mental lapses that reveal themselves in a number of different way. With Gup, we all understand he's just not up to it as a Test opener and isn't going softly, moreso he has gaping technical flaws that end up with edges to slip or being trapped on the crease 95% of the time.

I don't know if it's coaching. Tom has a very good technique. He's held up against Starc and co with a new ball, and Ashwin, Jadeja etc in 4th innings, scored tons against Pakistan etc. I'd suggest he needs to be working with the Gary Hermannsons of the mental skills world, pick Mark Richardson's brains, anyone who either knows how to bat for sessions on end or is well qualified to tell him how through their profession. I'm picking he went to the UK to learn to bat time, and whilst he averaged 45 odd or whatever, he still wasn't converting with nearly enough regularity.

Williamson looked to be really struggling despite there being nothing there for Ashwin. Looked really out of sorts.

Sigh, the rot has started after a good start. Not much hope in Taylor. He's been shite of recent times.
