***Official*** New Zealand tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa 2016

Yup. Guptill fundamentally cannot play the ball late. He never has done, and never will.

If he's ever selected again there's something seriously wrong.
The only time I can see Guptill making runs is against really poor bowling attacks on flat surfaces - i.e. Zimbabwe a couple of weeks ago. He's no good against spin either, so can't see him making runs in India if he makes that tour. Think this has to be the end of his test career, for the foreseeable future at least.

Bad luck, was about to say he needed one to straighten against Ross playing down the line but that's just unplayable.

We should quite literally try every other domestic opener before Guptill. Old, young, doesn't matter.

Todd Astle I reckon (5).
well michael papps has experience with south africa...

no opener in the country would have scored a run in this series. taylor is a world class batsman and he's struggling out there right now. kane is potentially a freak and he's been hit on the hand already and softly edged another.

jeet raval is the luckiest bugger in the squad right now.

review that. have to.

Ah ****, there's nothing you can do about that.

We're really seeing how much the first innings cost us here.

I take back what I said yesterday about this being a good test match pitch due to the variable bounce. It's now a substandard pitch where one ball goes though 1/2 stump height, another from a similar length bounces over waist height. Do our Saffer posters know if this is normal here?

SA batted really really well, but first two sessions with the ball from NZ cost them the match. Far too much loose stuff, mixed in with the odd great ball.

Was interesting hearing the comms talking about plays and misses in SA's first innings - they had something like 54, compared to the average which is 18. So that does suggest we were unlucky, but it also suggests that we were possibly a bit short with our lengths, and also doesn't reveal anything about how we'd slip one on to the pads every four balls.
