Olympics - does anyone actually care anymore?

Absolute shambles that the US girls were allowed to re-run the relay race. I don't care what the Brazilians were doing next to them I have never seen a re-run for a relay heat if you drop the baton it's your own damn fault.

It was almost completely their own fault, too. There was a slight nudge from Brazil, who were rightly disqualified, but instead of remaining composed and trying to continue Felix decides to get angry and throw the baton away. There was no real impact from the nudge, she just lost her cool.

Did that really happen? Jesus Christ.

That contrasts with an experience I had at the Sydney Olympics when the first Mrs Burgey and I watched some athletics in a morning sessio. The Australian runner Lauren Hewitt (no relation to the Non-steroidal Nadal) dropped the baton in the 4x100. Crowd was devastated as, understandably, was she.

Later, as we were leaving the stadium we bumped into a few of the boys from cricket who had been watching the handball nearby. They asked us what we'd been watching, whereupon TFMB (who always spoke before thinking) said "That stupid Lauren Hewitt girl dropped the baton in the relay!" At that very moment I turned to look at her and saw, over her shoulder, Lauren Hewitt who immediately took off in the opposite direction, moving much faster than she ever did while running for Australia, no doubt hoping she might have been granted a re-run of the whole damn race.

Disappointing. I hope we can at least come away with something in the bronze game - it would be a shame if it turned out to be an exact repeat of 2012.
If you're looking to insure yourself against disappointment, the TAB is offering some pretty generous odds on Germany in the Bronze match. $2.55 is pretty good given they beat us in pool play and pushed NED to the limit in the semi's.

I know she's not quite over yet, but raises a good question, which team has performed further below expectations this games (thus far) , Australia or New Zealand?
Overall, with 14 medals locked up and a couple of outside chances remaining, I'd say this games has been a modest success for NZ. Yes, it would've been nice to have converted a couple more silvers into golds, but HPSNZ targeted beating the London medal tally and they've (just) done it.

Rowing and cycling both underwhelmed (especially cycling, which targeted 4 medals before the games). But sailing and kayaking both exceeded expectations. If the hockey girls can pick themselves up for a bronze and if Tom Walsh can grab a medal then I'd say overall the team will have done well.

She didnt throw it away, she tried to throw it to the next runner.

A commentator has said that the officials have been re-instating everyone who had problems.
Saves having to put up with the controversy I s'pose.

Great day on the water then. In fact that's 10 of NZ's 14 medals earned in a boat of one variety or another.

Good for Walsh to get up and get bronze in the shotput, though kinda unfortunate that he pushes Elemba from the Congo to fourth - would have been their only medal of the games.

Great stuff from Walsh, I think he's the first nz man to medal in a field event. I pity that he overbalanced on his best throw, would've been close to a silver if he nailed it. Still a bronze gives our medal table a more symmetrical look.

NZ doesn't have many five-medal days - pretty good effort by the team today. Plus good ol' Nick Willis cruised into the 1500 final, and Lydia Ko's not out of the golf despite a bad day (by her standards) today.

Really stoked for Walsh, but yeah, feel for the fourth placegetter from Congo.

Is it a Northern European thing to bitch at another person's throat? Do people in Northern Europe say stuff like "Man, your throat is ugly"?
