Even with all that taken into account, it still seems rather just like picking a number out of thin air.

The Ronaldo signing can hardly be considered an example of overspending. Nor can the Nistelrooy one, come to think of it.
I think it was pretty good money for a relatively unproven teenager back then. Obviously they turned out to be great investments in the long run (Rooney, Ronaldo, van Nistelrooy), but they were significant outlays for the time I think.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle won't be entering the Johnstone's Paint Trophy (or whatever it is now). That gives the Chelsea Academy a clear run to the final so that their players get even more exposure and will raise the number of players they have out on loan to 75.

Dunno, don't really recall anyone balking at the fee at the time it happened, and it's not like other clubs weren't spending similar amounts on similar-level prospects around the same time (e.g. it was around then that Arsenal signed Reyes for more or less the same figure).

Should invite the top clubs from the conference in their place, as we finished 6th last season we would scrape in, then I get to boycott games against b teams

Oh it totally is but I don't think it would be too far away if there was a way of precisely working out transfer market inflation.

Yeah Ronaldo went to United at a time where a £12m price tag started to move more towards the middle of the market. Obviously it was still loads for an 18 year old though.

The Ronaldo figure did raise huge questions IIRC, as that sort of money on an unheard of kid from Portugal of all places (AKA Figo +10 in most peoples eyes at the time) was really a big gamble.

A few years later we spunked £17m on Nani and £20m on Anderson and no-one cared

IIRC Phil Thompson said that Liverpool were offered Ronaldo for 4m in 2003, and apparently he wanted 1m tax free. Liverpool were negotiating but were weary to give an 18 year old that much money. Apparently, a few other clubs like Barca, Arsenal and Juve were in for him too. But when United offered 3 times more than anyone else the deal was done.

HJK went to Gothenburg and nabbed a win over IFK in the UEFA Cup last night. Good result for football, IFK still living on 1980s glories.

When you think back they wasted a ridiculous amount of money on punts on unheard of players after they got it right with Ronaldo. Bebe obviously being the most famous flop they got but it is difficult to say they got value for money on any of foreign youngsters they got in for a few years after. Probably missed a really obvious one out which will come back to haunt me now.

Dunno, i've seen clips of him since that show he's clearly got some level of technical ability, scored some screamers back in Portugal. £7m in the scheme of things isn't a huge sum of money compared to other ventures we, or any other club, have made. Fergie trusted his scouts on what they'd seen, and I believe we went high to beat Real to him. From reading what Fergies said, he was going to need a few years work to get the stamina and gamecraft for him to suceed, if he could reach that level - he was a punt based on technical ability, alas it didn't pay off (doesn't help he did his cruciate at the start of his second season when he was out on loan at Bestikas

The Mikel deal was dodgy as **** however, both at our end and Chelsea's

Smalling is the one that looks like paying off. Evra and Vidic were a bit older. We haven't worked the transfer market especially well since then.
