Ali has always been in the side at least as much for his batting as bowling so after his 150 he isn't going to be dropped this summer. I could imagine us playing a spinner, 3 seamers and Ali at The Oval. Of the candidates to play Rashid may well be in pole position, but it depends on if they go for an attacking spinner or someone who could give them some control. To a degree that will also be the choice in India. Picking a spinner also isn't the same as having a balanced seam attack, as you only tend to have one specialist at best, so to a degree you can only have an off spinner, a leg spinner or a slow left armer. The problem England will face in India is the ball often does nothing for the first 3 and a half days, so they may look for someone who can bowl 35 overs a day for 70 runs, particularly if they have some backup spin options who can get the ball to spin when the pitch deteriorates. It will be interesting to see how things pan out over the remainder of the summer.A year or two ago I would of thought it was fairly ludicrous to play Rashid as your only spinner (as I said at the time of the WI 2015 tour). However I'd seriously be considering Rashid over Ali for these Pakistan tests. Ali just looks lost as a bowler. No plans, no consistency, no improvement. Rashid seems to be bowling as well as he ever has. It might not be good enough still but imo I'd be giving him serious consideration. The 4 seamers they will play does allow them a little freedom in that regard.
Ali is comfortably the better bat imo but I'm not overly concerned in that regard as there is plenty of batting and Rashid is certainly not a bad bat. Of more importance now is finding someone who they can have some confidence in going into the winter tests in Bangladesh and India.
Was it 2 tours ago when Hoggard got ridiculously good figures bowling cutters ... Broad and Anderson could be just as effective.jeez, a far cry from the last time england toured india when panesar and swann absolutely wrecked them.
Deadly Derek Underwood also had a good series when I was 9 or 10 and for me he was almost a medium paced left arm cutter of the ball than a traditional spinner. Maybe we need a traditional experienced county trundler more than a spinner. I think you probably need to get the ball to hit the wicket quite hard to get it to deviate on some Indian pitches.anderson was silly good last time in india.
the gulf between him and all the other seamers playing was nuts.

If India prepare pitches like this I will be absolutely amazed. Far more likely to get the Saffer series pitches were Ashwin spins the first ball of the match 2 feet. The problem England will face in India is the ball often does nothing for the first 3 and a half days, so they may look for someone who can bowl 35 overs a day for 70 runs, particularly if they have some backup spin options who can get the ball to spin when the pitch deteriorates.
Yeah, looking at the level of both teams right now, that might be India's best chance of beating England. Make it a bit of a coin-toss and take skill out of the picture as far as possible. If India prepare pitches like this I will be absolutely amazed.
