*Official* English Football Season 2016-17

Luton at home on day 1. I have no zest at all for the new season after last season's capitulation and appalling day out at Wembley - especially as we have about 3 decent players under contract.

Come to the away game in Luton LT. We can go to the pub afterwards and discuss important matters like Richard.

Go to Luton, meet sledger, discuss Richard. Hmmmm, tempting. Now to top it off we've drawn Reading away in the first round of the League Cup.

Very sad today to read of the death of Eamonn Dolan. Perhaps not a household name, but a well known figure in English football. Passed away aged just 48.

Did the England squad all postal vote or did they let them do it in an embassy or something?

Insert age old joke about none of them being able to put a cross into a box anyway here

It's starting to creep in in lower league football too. We don't involve the manager in contract talks and have a 'head of academy and recruitment'

Makes sense tbh but it has to be a balance. Who was the guy at Spurs and Liverpool who signed a bunch of players that didn't fit the way their managers played?
Has to be like that with the movement of managers. You need to set up an organisation that doesn't revolve around the person you appoint to be in charge, and probably double so in lower leagues where there's ambition for the manager to move higher, whereas that's not as much of a concern in a PL club.

I think you only need to look at Southampton to see how it can work over here when done right. Look at the way they dealt with the loss of the manager and star players last time. Les Reed freely admits that they always have replacements in mind for players and the manager should anything happen, and Koeman was selected because he fitted to the Southampton way, not because he could revolutionize the team. As a result they've hit change without batting an eyelid so far.

Talking of Southampton, they've signed Redmond from Norwich for £10m. Reckon that's going to be a cracking piece of business, as I feel he's looked good all through his Norwich career. Struggled as the rest of the team were not up to Prem scratch, but that season in the Championship he was excellent. Reckon the step up will be something he'll take in his stride, and £10m might be a bit of a steal.

Nope, that's sort of the beauty of their system, the manager fits to the club ethos, not the other way round, which allows them to sign players knowing that any new manager will make use of them.
