Never had a doubt about Woakes batting ability as a number 7. Just the bowling is the issue, and there is only room for him or Stokes. He is a good player to have as injury cover though as part of a 5 man attack, that is for sure.
5 seem up options is the future

It would be harsh to drop him again though this time, as he's done pretty well since coming in for Stokes, hasn't really put a foot wrong.

Couldn't agree more. Yet, I wouldn't be too surprised if Woakes actually will come through as a bowler in the forseeable future (as in picked on bowling alone).

Not sure about those comments saying 330 etc. is par. Pitch is as flat as you get in England really. The slope adds a bit for the bowlers if they can exploit it but there's nowt really in it. England have gotten out to nothing deliveries. Compton's was a long half-volley.

England would have been in big trouble without Bairstow.

Also regarding his lbw the margin of error for umpire's call is going to be reduced from 50% to 25% apparently. So Bairstow's was umpire's call because less than 50% of the ball was hitting. That will now be 25%.

That has not been decided yet... just talked about.

And yes England would be in trouble without Bairstow, but having somebody the quality of Bairstow at 7 along with Ali, Woakes/Stokes etc... is part of dealing with the England team nowadays. Agree though this looks a 500 run pitch.... But probably not for SL facing Broad and Anderson.

West Indies in Australia, as the pitches were mostly roads and the West Indies still got rolled over.
Aye, that was very grim, some absolute cabbages in the West Indies batting line up.

The opener whose name I forget alongside Kraigg was the worst thing I ever seen.

This has been very dull though and one sided, Lanka never in with a chance of winning a test.

Bad as each other

WI were horribad and unwatchable

SL are in same boat but can at least point to pitches

2 terrible series

It was the right thing to try and do considering the match situation, shame he couldn't pull it off, still a fantastic innings for us, hopefully Broad can get a troll innings in and push us well past 400.

Soft dismissal but so delighted he is showing his worth. The stick he used to get from England 'fans' on social media and the like used to anger me so much. He is a good player and a great guy (been lucky enough to meet him on a few occasions and he is so down to earth and sound) so whilst the opposition are weak I am delighted for him.

Not really. Just grind them into the dust, get a century. Bairstow scores quickly enough at the another end. Herath basically relies on the batsmen to do that sort of thing to pick up wickets, otherwise he's toothless.

This isn't Bangladesh on a green pitch where the result is a formality. Sri Lanka could put up 400-500 here.

Reckon there is a fair argument for Finn in ahead of Broad. Who is more likely to stick with Jonny and build a partnership?
