Some things just need their own thread.
You could maybe think of something from individual sports or some matches, but in a team sports over a course of an entire season? It's got to be miles above the rest. Unbelievable. Is this the most unlikely/incredible result in sporting history? Nothing I can think of comes close.
Heh. In all seriousness, if you count Wrestling, it's got to be Taker's streak ending, hasn't it? I was in a daze for a full 15 minutes after it happened. When Daniel Bryan won at Wrestlemania 30.
The only thing I can think of recently is Jenson Button's F1 title win in 2009.Is this the most unlikely/incredible result in sporting history? Nothing I can think of comes close.
That was explainable due to Brawn being a brilliant technical director, and a diffuser that really pushed the rules to the limit. This is something else. The only thing I can think of recently is Jenson Button's F1 title win in 2009.
Becker winning Wimbledon at 16 is about the closest thing I can think of, but this is more outlandish IMO, given the number of matches played, opposition involved etc. Just a great achievement. Is this the most unlikely/incredible result in sporting history? Nothing I can think of comes close.
Nah, not even remotely close, as I posted in the Football thread these odds are just stupendous. People trying to rationalize it into other things are failing because this is just ****ing stupid, really the most absurd sporting thing I've seen. There's not one person in the World that would have thought that 5000-1 on Leicester wasn't just about right. 22 people backed them at that, probably for a laugh.Becker winning Wimbledon at 16 is about the closest thing I can think of, but this is more outlandish IMO, given the number of matches played, opposition involved etc. Just a great achievement.
Yeah this is over 38 games. You just expect runs like this to end at some point and for everyone to shrug and go "Oh well, it was fun". This just kept going and never ended. I've never seen anything like it.This is miles ahead of everything. Wasn't Greece to win the Euro in 2004 still only 500-1 or something?
Nothing comes close because of the length of time necessary to win it. You can't just fluke a couple of knock out wins.
North Carolina State winning the 82-83 NCAA Tournament has to be close. A team of nobodies with a crazy coach beat Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon/Clyde Drexler to win a National Championship. Is this the most unlikely/incredible result in sporting history? Nothing I can think of comes close.
