just wondering, how old are tendulkar, ganguly, kumble and dravid respectedly? because once these three players retire (im guessing withing the next 3-5 years???), even though india are developing some good young players, they are massive shoes to fill, not only in talent but experience and cricketing nous, and make it harder for india to be the "worlds best side"

Tendy's 31,Ganguly is 32, Kumble is 34 or 35 and Dravid is 31 as well.
And i agree...they will be large shoes to fill... very large indeed.

The above 4 will retire sometime soon, they play far too many ODI's compare to tests, they don't have any good seamers, etc.

...I give it 25 years at least

then again, englands small ODI schedule hasn't worked all that well for them until the last year.

Can't see it until their fans start coping with defeats better, and not calling for the head of player/captain/coach whenever they lose a series, and then elevating them to God status when they win.

calling for coach/captain/player's head is pakistani fan base reaction in general.
Indian fans,if anything, are guilty of keeping things the same for too long.

yeah.
That was an anomaly in terms of ind fan reaction....ie, asking for resignations and stuff.... usually IND fans berate their players but are off the pace when it comes to wanting changes...in my opinion, they stick to the same combo too much.

I can also remember people calling time and again for Laxman to be dropped - and Ganguly - even Tendulkar, definitely for Chopra...

Search the archives - the over-praise is just as bad.

hmmm. you are right about the current crop....
i was going more by the 'upto late 90s' when uptil then IND were very very conservative to change.

What's your point? Some Australian fans have called for Kaspa, Martyn, Langer, Lehmann and hell even Warne to be dropped. That doesn't affect their team at all.

India's sub-par performances in the past have nothing to do with their fans and why this would be mentioned in a topic asking when will they ever be the best is beyond me.

There is a more significant number of fans (check back through the CW archives, especially looking at the WC'03 and NWS'02) who are prone to over-criticism and over-praise and look at the short-term more than the long-term (yes, this also applies to Australian fans who want Lee in the side for some unknown reason).

Unless the selectors can totally block this out - which doesn't seem to happen - and build for the long term, then I can't see any team as volatile as this ever making the top.

the people high up, and in the media, and in the corporate arena, want brett lee in the team because he is seen as a marketable commodity, and is a cash cow for cricket australia, and the newspapers love him because he is easy to praise and criticise, because his performances are so volatile and it will help them write articles and therefore sell papers.

Just to say that you brought such an old dead thread back to surface!

Btw, why do you think India can't become the number 1 team in the world? Whats make you so dead sure? I don't think any team can overthrow Australia in near future (1-3 years) but after that anything can happen.

No, i don't think anyone can put up a timeframe, but i think that in 2-3 years Australia would lose some of their brilliant players in Glen,Warne, Jason(?) and then i think India will have a good chance of getting to the top slot. Again its just a thought.

by which point India may well have lost some of they great players they have now. I think England are a team that have more going for them in terms of being number one at some point in the future.
Its going to take a pretty big slump from the Aussies and another team to really raise its game for the Aussies not to be number one
