Have a hard time buying that you need any more motivation to play at your best than when you're defending your no. 1 ranking. The team has simply declined like all very good teams do. It's been rather quick though, admittedly.

TBF, they have lost one of the best opening batsmen ever, one of the best captains ever, one of the best wk/batsmen ever and arguably the greatest cricketer ever plus Steyn & Vern are injured AND they are battling quotas whilst being relatively underpaid

Yeah he can just take a long time to get back to his best, he looked so innocuous in that West Indies series, still not great against NZ but then has been his best ever since the ashes started.

Confidence is a wonderful thing. Had a good series bar one stumping and a couple of drops which in 3 matches may be more than he would like but not a total disaster.
