There is nothing 'bit and pieces' about Stokes either. Inconsistent and slightly maddening sure, but never bits and pieces.
So far Stokes averages less than 30 with the bat in tests. He maybe as good as 35 but that's not 40+ which a specialist would bring. In away conditions one needs batting as without runs on the board, it becomes pointless. Root can bowl a bit. I would drop one of Stokes and Moeen.

I can't put into words how much I love Dale Steyn. There is just another level with him. Of course that celebration is priceless.

On Nick Compton. Obviously went to Hilton College. One of the supreme boys schools in SA. It has it's own postal code. Former SA cricketers who went there have been Roy McLean (Barry Richard's hero growing up) ,Johnny Waite, Mike Procter & Dereck Crookes.

Not sure if it is his father or uncle but I think it is the later, is the cricket writer for one of the major newspapers in Durban the Mercury. His name Patrick. Think he played some 2nd XI cricket in England and SA.

Steyn bowling beautifuly here, one wonders how different the india tour might have been had steyn been fit for most of it, particularly as india seemed to struggle with the reversing ball and steyn is one of the best exponents of reverse swing

Bairstow coming at 7 makes up for it I think

Yeah that's his uncle; he actually did play a bit of First Class cricket in South Africa.

Stokes not yet being a perfect middle order batsman is one of the reasons Moeen is playing at eight, a guy who bats three in county cricket. Then you've got Woakes with eight first class centuries at nine. The lower middle/lower order of this side is not a weakness.

I'm not convinced England have anyone who could do better than the 36 average Stokes has managed at 6 anyway, even if you ignore his bowling. If Stokes couldn't bowl he'd probably be replaced by someone who could bowl, but if England wanted to pick a specialist #6 batsman I reckon they'd back him anyway. His bowling is more than just 'a bonus', but it's not required to keep up Ballance from taking his spot, I don't think.

Yeah, if we have guys averaging 35 batting at 6,7 and 8 that is better than having a guy at 6 averaging 40 and then the 7 and 8 average 35 and 25 like most sides get.
Depends. I can see the idea that a better batsman can be worth more than just a slightly higher average per innings, he might be someone who can score runs when the allrounder can't.

This is pretty abstract though. Stokes should definitely be playing

Yeah, also feels better giving him one spot in the side and sticking with it. Be no good shuffling him up and down the order all the time depending on which keeper we have playing or who is in better form etc...

Always annoying to encounter people who comment without watching the cricket. Some one said to me the other day Ishant should be dropped from the test team. He took just 1-2 wickets v SA. I was like wtf.. Had to explain how he had been wonderful last two years and was terrific in Sri Lanka. The idiot wasn't convinced. Said his over all average in tests is poor. Saw Ishant two days back again in the Vijay Hazare Trophy game and he bowled beautifully for Delhi. I don't know how to explain it but ****s like these are very annoying.
