With Sobers and Hammond, you don't need 3 specialist pacers. That way you don't weaken the batting and your cordon.
Just go chockers with the ARs

Hutton
Gavaskar
Bradman
Kallis
Miller
Sobers
Gilchrist
Imran
Davidson
Warne
Murali

Trying to think of the best way to have Warne and Murali in the same team, just love the idea of having it spinning both ways from opposite ends.

Imran in over Hadlee to shore up the batting with the loss of Hammond.

International Captain
Watson referenced David Gower's list in another thread and I subsequently looked it up and was reading some of it online. When I was reading Hammond's write up, I was a bit surprised to read that he was described as a more aggressive batting version of Kallis.

I had previously read from at least a couple of sources that his strike rate was probably in the low 40's at best.

I also noted that I belive it was coronis who referenced a source that estimated his s/r was in the mid 50's.
Genuinely wonder which of these estimates does everyone believe is closer to reality.
A lot of that has to do with timeless tests. Check out the scorecards from the Ashes in 1928/29. Some of the strike-rates are in the 30s.

D-did you just pick Hammond in an ATG XI? Next thing you know it'll be Sutcliffe.

Not the best distribution. I would move Imran to the first team and let Wasim join Hadlee and Lillee to ensure a left arm option for the second team. Or maybe move Kallis instead of Sobers to the first team and let him open. Bat Viv at 3, Lara at 4. Something like this.

Barry Richards
Jacques Kallis
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
George Headley

Viv to provide offspin support to the first team and Sachin to chip in with his leg breaks for the second team on days 4 and 5 when the tracks turn.

Not my team. Was rearranging yours.

But if it was required to play two spinners, yes, I would choose him. First rate slip fielder and more than useful bowler.

Draw the line at Sutcliffe though.

Here is a list of English spinners who have taken 30 or more wickets in Australia. The fact that there is gap of 40 years from Rhodes to Titmus shows how difficult it has been for spinners in Australian conditions.

Geoff Miller was a surprise, and interestingly there is no Verity, Laker, or Lock because they didn't take enough wickets. Rhodes only makes the list because of a stella tour in 1903/04 when he took 31 wickets at 16 for the series.

W. Bates (1881 to 1887) - 50 wickets at 16
R. Peel (1884 to 1885) - 63 wickets at 22
G. Miller (1978 to 1983) - 38 wickets at 22
J. Briggs (1884 to 1898) - 46 wickets at 28
W. Rhodes (1903 to 1921) - 42 wickets at 28
D. Underwood (1970 to 1980) - 50 wickets at 31
J. Emburey (1978 to 1988) - 35 wickets at 32
L. Braund (1901 to 1908) - 39 wickets at 40
F. Titmus (1962 to 1975) - 37 wickets at 40

There have been 17 English pace bowlers who have taken 30 or more wickets in Australia, but here is the top 10. Fred Trueman took 29 wickets at 27 during his 8 Tests.

G. Lohmann (1887 to 1892) - 41 wickets at 12
W. Barnes (1882 to 1887) - 33 wickets at 15
F. Foster (1911 to 1912) - 32 wickets at 22
SF. Barnes (1901 to 1912) - 77 wickets at 22
J. Snow (1970 to 1971) - 31 wickets at 23
F. Tyson (1954 to 1959) - 31 wickets at 25
H. Larwood (1928 to 1933) - 51 wickets at 27
D. Gough ( 1994 to 1999) - 41 wickets at 27
B. Voce (1932 to 1947) - 41 wickets at 28
I. Botham (1978 to 1987) - 69 wickets at 28

SF Barnes seems to be the greatest English bowler of any type in Australian conditions with the most wickets at only 22 runs a piece.

"Could've been champions" ATG Australia

1 Sid Barnes -Dropped for reasons other then cricket ability, out averaged Bradman in a tour
2 Phillip Hughes -Early Death
3 Archie Jackson - Early Death
4 Brad Hodge -Being a Victorian, dropped with an average of 58
5 Darren Lehmann - Being tubby didnt stop Taylor, Gooch, Boon but Simpson basically locked Lehmann out of the national side cause of his girth for a decade and only got a run at the end of his career
6 Doug Walters -Struggled in England but dominated in Aus
7 Barry Jarman - As suggested below
8 Mitchell Johnson - As we know at his best devastating, just didn't always bring it
9 Stuart McGill - "Warned" off for most of his career, when thye both played out performed Warne
10 Bill Johnston - Despite his stellar figures, and versatilty of bowling both pace and spin just doesn't get rated
11 Ian Meckiff - Done for chucking in his day but his action doesn't look worse then several bowlers today, The modern allowances for arm flex would see him allowed.

12 Thomson - On field collision drastically reduced his speed.
13 David Hussey - Same era as Hodge
14 Stuart Law - As above

Barry Jarman for 'keeper. Was considered the best gloveman in the country (and his dismissals per innings rate is exceptional) but lost his spot in the Test side to a young upstart called Rod Marsh, at the time due in large part to Marsh's superior batting ability. The rest, as they say, is history.

I really like that list Malleeboy. I would try and sneak Flem into the squad too. Such a great bowler who averaged 25 and troubled many quality batsman in his twenty test career

Lee kinda ruined his chances at a long career imo. The younger, cooler, more marketable and of course faster bowler who was nowhere near as effective at his actual job... and Dizzy and Pidge obviously weren't getting dropped around that time
