mitchell starc is absurd. when he learns to work batsmen over with angles and variations he'll be ridiculous now he's got the accuracy sorted.

only other worry is fitness. blokes don't usually bowl at such insane speed for very long.

Smith is such a teary eyed captain. Really like the bloke but he looks like a teacher just told him off whenever anything doesn't go his way.
Indeed!
Reminds me of Ponting. His behaviour could be so ridiculously close to my 14 year old pupils' .

Really impressed with Taylor's concentration. Apart from the dropped catch on 137 he didn't look like getting out today and showed no sign of fatigue.

So who's ahead?

On the one hand, surely our batting must fail eventually. On the other hand, those cracks could really hurt on the 5th day when New Zealand come out to bat. Also will depend on how long the tail lasts tomorrow, if they can wag a bit then we could see a 3rd innings similar to what we've seen in places like Adelaide in the past....says a lot about how cricket has changed over the past 10 years....this was in the 90's, even early 2000's, this game would be a very obvious bore draw. It's still *probably* the safest bet, but there's still plenty of time left in the game.

Obviously a very good day from Taylor and Williamson, very well batted to get their side back in the game. Difficult for a biased Aussie like me to watch (as witnessed by my smailing/Gambhiring :p) but still an effort you have to take your hat off to. May have even been sweet if Blocky was still here :p

I mean I know they chanted boring a bit and gave Baz a bit of a send off. But this seems like a pretty good crowd. Plenty of respect to Taylor and Williamson.
I think mostly crowds are pretty fair sports in Australia wrt cricket. Haven't seen too many dire incidents.

Yeah amazed me that he didn't show any tiredness until perhaps a little in the last hour, though still defended solidly. So pleased he made it to stumps to give himself a chance of pushing on to a mammoth score while the tail hangs round tomorrow.

Ok I wanted to wait before the close of play incase I jinxt it. Just so so happy with the day's play today.

Been following this New Zealand team for a while and been so impressed with their progress and growth, mainly because it just seems that this team often doesn't get any favours from the cricketing gods or luck or whatever you want to call them. I thought they were unlucky to come out 0-0 against England in 2013.
I thought a 3 match series this year in England might have gone 2-1 in New Zealand's way.

I was so excited for this series, to see Boult and Southee in Australian conditions. And then the first test match just deflated everything, with a flash of briliance from Kane.
Yet another team growing and improving completely destroyed in Australia..because when you watch Australia bat at home, it's like the golden era never ended. At least 2 (sometimes more) more of Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn toning up on Day 1, getting a double on Day 2 and just when you think it's a flat pitch, the opposition is 100/5. The same script repeated over and over again for years.

And then Day 3 - Kane and Ross show

Still mighty disappointed with the way my man Boult but this more than made up for it.

I know it's far far from over and Australia is still a bit ahead but I can't resist anymore :D

Thank you Kane. May you go on to get 10,000 test runs at 52 with 35 hundreds.

I have to say with great shame that I thought Ross was just about done after the first test. Never been so thrilled to be wrong. Just magnificent stuff. Would love him to go on and score 303 tomorrow, and then walk straight up to Baz, put him in a headlock and give him a big noogie: "Back in your rightful place one spot behind me, mate!"

New Zealand really do need one more session out of him tomorrow though. If he can do it and help us to a 50-100 lead, then he'll have gone a long way to ensuring the draw and may even give us a little chance to put Australia under pressure in the afternoon.

I felt the same. my flat mate who happens to be a Kiwi and a casual cricket fan, whose just got a passing interest now after NZ made the finals this year, came rushing in during the first test and asking me how Ross Taylor was doing. That's the only guy he knew in the team along with the captain. And I had to report sadly that he got a duck.

He'll be a happy guy today.

Yeah, weird things happen in the 2nd innings. It's possible that losing Khawaja will leave the Aussie lineup weak for a collapse but I don't think NZ have a spinner good enough to hold the opposition in a second innings chokehold. Every instance of a team making 550 and losing has a gun spinner performance behind it - Peel, Kumble, Warne.

Even if Southee/Boult do the damage to expose a Khawaja-less middle order then I expect Voges and Marsh to set up a stiff target with NZ just hanging on at the end.

This is assuming that Taylor and Craig don't have a good partnership that lets NZ bat for another half a day this innings. If that happens they're in business.

Anyway, all 3 results back on. Cabinet is probably right that I made an error abandoning this match after a session, but in my defence, I have actually slept this weekend for a change

Ok I don't think not having Khawaja is going to be that big a deal. The guy just came in. The best batsman in the side is due for a big knock any time now, not to forget Warner.

If NZ do manage to bat for a fair bit tomorrow and take a decent lead, draw would be the most likely result then. I do expect this pitch to have a few twists on Day 5 though..so NZ better get at least a 80-90 runs lead, and more importantly bat for as long as they can because you don't want to bat for too long on Day 5. Australia have demonstrated that they don't take too long to notch up 200 on the board against the NZ attack.
