Clarkson on his debut game:

"I'm a bit stiff this morning but that's to be expected after not bowling at all last season and bowling quite a few [27] overs during the four days. I'm really enjoying being back bowling and it's just another thing to add - you know, I'm not just a batsman, I can also bowl and just show the selectors what I've got."...

"The coach [Heinrich Malan] knows what I'm like and he said to me `just be yourself and just play your natural game' and it just kind of clicked out there. I felt really comfortable and started hitting a few out of the middle, so I was like `sweet, I might as well keep going'. It was unfortunate that I got out [caught at short cover] but I really enjoyed it our there.

"I got a bit of a taster when we played the Wellington Firebirds in a warm-up game and got a few runs against them and kind of got used to the fact that the bowlers don't bowl many bad balls and you have to move around the crease when you're batting and create more [scoring] options. I really enjoyed the step up."

Kelly named in the XI and ND are batting, so I'll post a ball-by-ball in the thread for Howsie tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see if Auckland gets away with this Munro at 4 and CdG at 5 business.

What's the gos with Kelly? What is he, a batsman?

Bruce is a bit of a run machine for CD, looking forward to seeing if he can back it up this season.

Yeah well Howsie's long been tipping a very clean and strong power game with Kelly, that he felt was very overdue to hit our T20 scene in particular. He gives it a very hard nudge with the bottom hand to get this power though, which is probably why Howsie says he likes him more in white ball cricket. He tries to bowl some SLA too, but from the footage I retrieved from the A tourney, it's not flash.

Yeah he's definitely a bit bottom-handed but unlike Nicholls he still brings the bottom hand through straight when he drives. It's always going to look a little bit inside-out but it's something he can make work technically. Actually reminds me a little bit of Kohli, but more exaggerated. Plenty to work with.

Can't bowl for toffee though.

Yeah well I don't know exactly why it would've been a backward step for the guy to go and live with Howsie's other mate Mathieson in Napier for the last couple of seasons, other than CD being at its peak hatred for the "foreign legion" like Raval during that time. Kelly would've looked much better on TV than playing Bevan Small as a specialist batsman, I'd have thought.

I presume NZ U19 will be playing some games to prepare for the WC three months from now, so some footage of Leopard probably will hit the vault this season.

Guessing it's green and swingy for the ND vs Auckland match with ND bowled out for 124. Auckland's turn to bat and captain Nicol thinks no Guptill today, I'll handle this and walks out to open. You can guess what happened.

Nicol's four-hour 33 didn't have many bad KPIs, I can tell you. I expected it to be littered with play and misses, but it was just lots of length balls being blocked.

Don't think the batting KPIs will look too good at Mt Maunganui today. Bates, Munro and Baker exactly the types to dominate in the c. 2000 stereotypical NZ conditions that I imagine they have there. A Mark Orchard special.

Yeah I can report Bates was hitting a perfect line and length and getting movement against Leo Carter last round (I just watched Carter's knock from that game).

It probably is a fresh and green one today, but we also have to remember that it's ND (I've made videos lampooning their pre-Xmas Plunket campaigns being "****ed right off the bat" in the past), and they're playing a team that has a home ground that is so friendly for batting, it thinks it's going to get away with CdG as a free and easy No. 4. A guy this thread thought was only playing T20 this season, because he was becoming an apprentice electrician.

Heh, 58/8 now. In hindsight Auckland may have erred by delaying handing the ball to the 120-130k nibblers, thus allowing ND to score an above-par 124 . Ferguson and McC probably bowled too short/quick.

ND didn't think it looked like too much of a minefield pre-game either, unless Jono Boult was picked to add some runs from deep down in the engine room.

Still 22 overs down to be bowled before stumps. Could Nick Kelly's first two FC innings be completed on his first day. :P
