Well this is going as expected for Wellington, though Kippax right so far to back Woodcock for survival in a completely non sarcastic way.

Rutherford 20(21) against Dougeh and a debutante(?) - wonder how many of those have been scored between point and the keeper.

With the amount of abuse Howsie's given him over the years, you can trust Woodcock to dig in against this mob. Point to prove.

Hira scorewatch: 1* (17).

Was thinking of popping in during lunch hour, not so keen if Hira has turned into a stonewaller ...

Nah Tickner played in Munro's 281. Definitely a trundler rather than a great new CD seam hope, just by my viewing of him in that.

Imitating that other great opening batsman .... Ronnie Hire
tbf, Woodcock did start out as an opener for Wellington.

It’s my 12th season but it seems like five minutes! I think so, I started out opening the batting and my bowling was secondary. Then my role changed a bit, going from a bowling and a middle order batting role, before flipping back to opening for two-three seasons. Then it’s slipped back to being a middle order player with bowling being secondary and I have been able to finally find my spot in that middle order and also offer the team some useful overs. Without a doubt having those two strings to my game has been a benefit for me.

Buchanan and Littlejohn were certainly fans of his doggedness at the crease.

That second ball was a ripper tbf.

I think everyone that enjoys schadenfreude (which is everyone) can get behind Wellington reverting to competition whipping boys, though CW favourite Blundell can be exempted for now.

Playing Blundell just two spots above Jeets in the order is a bit unfortunate, as is ND insisting Santner still belongs in the engine room.

Edgar probably misled by loosey goosey Craigchopa's FC record itbt.

Lunch report from Eden Park 2 (arrived at 2-40):

Looks like a good batting pitch, ball coming on a little slowly. Canty will be wondering how they are 5 down.

Bates was steady, bowling full and straight. Fulton edged the only wide ball I recall Bates bowling, good low slip catch by Guptill. Leo Carter looked composed against the seamers, but got tangled up by Nethula, could have been out twice (sweeping, ball missed bat / pad / wickets / keeper and went for 4 byes; under-edged cut) before missing another sweep to be lbw. Mitch bowled a good 2nd spell, got one to bounce from a length to take shoulder of Ellis' bat, then almost pinned Fletcher with a good short ball.

I'm not surprised that it is McClure, even on debut, who is the one trying to keep the Canterbury innings hanging together, and doing a pretty good job so far.

Having zero knowledge of Chch club cricket. But, I will still confidently proclaim :) that they should have given this guy his chance 12 months earlier.

Yuss, openers for Auckland:
Martin J Guptill
Martin L Guptill-Bunce

It's not even surprising any more that the top-4 batsmen today scored just one fifty from twelve innings (193 runs at 16) and the bulk of runs have been scored in the engine room. Wonder how green and swingy the conditions were.

Tinge of green at Eden Park 2, but not much swing or seam.

Watched 1 hr pre-lunch and 1 hr post-tea, think I saw 3 balls beat the bat, 2 thick edges along the ground to 3rd man, 1 edge to slip.

CdG at #4 and batting above the skipper?

it worked tbf

I love Tom Bruce's loopy offerings. After leaving out our main spinner (what does Clarkson bowl though?) it looks like we bowled 29 overs of part time off spin. Not sure what to make of that. Nice to see we're still in the hunt against that batting line up with our depleted attack.

Boult lacks the gorgeous figures all of us not supporting Wellington hoped for. Southee has them though, but dat engine room. Considering the woggers Australia has down the order I don't want to see NZ send their spuddy hack top order full of Khawaja's and Marshes back to the shed for nothing only for Mitchell Starc to biff a 50.

Then again we have the best Australian wicket keeper batsman in our squad so...

Nice to see Flynn still there on a score.

Solid day of cricket, glad I took the day off and drove down. Southee was good, had some proper zip. Boult wasn't as bad as his figures looked, decent going considering what he's come back from. Ronchi was Ronchi and Wellington was Wellington. Craig Cachopa will fit right in with those baseballers. Should've stayed in Auckland because that record is going to take a real hammering now.
