damned if he does damned if he doesn't. Herath was happily trolling away but this Sri Lankan tail can go from 3 or 4 wickets in hand to all out very quickly. Hitting out was the right move.

Dammit Yadav, seemed to fall forward in slow mo which suggests he didn't pick it up early enough. Fielders who do might have gotten closer and still dropped it.

According to viriya the latter is a worse fielder ftr.

Weakens the batting a lot. If Binny can't bat at all, I doubt there will be place for him for long as well. Needs to average 27-28 at least with the bat.
Thought he was being picked as an all rounder? If he's only a 5th bowler you'd want at least 10 more runs on that average (unless you're a fan of England mid 90s and the Ronnie Irani's of the world).

So anyways, re the innings Kaushal played coming in at 47-6, if he got out playing a really attacking stroke he'd be under fire like Haddin was during 47 ao for sure. But as it turned out, his approach worked and he's helped SL avoid the follow on quite comfortably. They might even push 160-180 now.

So in which situations/conditions is it a good idea to go for either approach?

Yeah agreed. Has to average 35+ if he has to stay in the team. And that is a bare minimum Ashwin level.

Rough decision. Good to see Prasad back on the park.

ftr, just to support OS's gambhiring - The last five times India have had their opposition 5 down for less than 100, they have allowed the last-five wickets to make - 586, 108, 272, 123, 109*

Was about to post that. Our bowling to tailenders is so woeful that those stats should surprise no one who's followed our tests.

Not the first rough decision today. We've seen a dodgy LBW-call and Ishant might have been no-balled on another day.

Anyway, I find it hard to explain why India seem to be unable to wrap up the tail..., 47/5 at lunch to 175/8 at tea. Good match though±

ok so for India to lose the following has to happen.

-The last two wickets need to troll the Indian lead to under 100
-The hardest part - shoot India out for about 100 again.
-Mathews leads the chase home because the other ****s only play to their potential once in a blue moon, or have no potential at all (Tharanga).
