Big fan of Varun Aaron, but hard to consistently defend him when he goes for so many runs without wickets.
If you're going to go with a guy who will leak a few runs, I'd much rather it be Umesh, because at least he moves the ball a bit and sometimes gets some bounce.

Not sure how many of the Indian batsmen I will regard as potentially good test players. Pujara and KL Rahul look good for me for the long run. Rahane possibly (he still has issues I am not comfortable with). Vijay has really developed well. Kohli has a long way to go. Guys like Dhawan even just make me uncomfortable.

What's Rahul done to convince you that Kohli and Rahane haven't?

I have seen Rahul bat a few times at domestic level. He has the basic technique which is quite impressive. Rahane and Kohli play lines outside off which is just not on in tests except if you have the most amazing technique ever. Kohli also dabs at the ball too much instead of going for the defensive stroke.

I remember debating with you earlier re: Dhawan vs KL. I think that despite his flaws, Dhawan is a useful opener. He may not have the ideal technique but he does get big scores at a rapid pace often enough.

Dhawan has improved a lot since his young days. Lot of technical flaws eliminated. He still is not as tight as I would like him to be. In tests, I prefer players who do not attempt lots of shots even where they can play a defending block. For some players it is okay but you need players who can face deliveries. Even guys like Tendulkar and Lara, for instance, didn't play a lot of attacking shots in tests.

You have to be joking. Especially with Lara.
