*Official* 3rd Test at Edgbaston

Yes I'd rest him completely from ODI's. The longer we can keep him fresh enough and in the Test team the better and not just for immediate results but to share his knowledge and play alongside the candidates tipped to take over from him.

Unless he's gonna play in 2019 then there's little point playing Jimmy in ODIs
Would you at least consider giving him a look next Summer with the champions trophy on the horizon?

Its not as if England are overflowing with world class ODI bowlers.

Had forgotten all about the CT. Would at least not play him away from home.

Meh, on flat tracks you have less of a window of opportunity as a swing bowler, not no chance. Anderson in 2010-11 in Australia, 2012 in India and 2012 in Sri Lanka for example. It's often about the quality of the response to the new ball and whether or not he an get it to reverse.

His pace hasn't really declined but he hasn't looked quite as sharp on flat decks as he did in 2010-2.

You'd say he's less likely to produce the sort of performances he put up that Howe just mentioned, for example.

Just watching the highlights on 5 (well, 5+1 technically).

Lyth looks a little short of the requisite quality, I'd say.

Not sure who's next up to open tho, but. As long as we don't try to ruin Root again.

He doesn't always move it as much anymore. 2010 and 2011 summers he was hooping it round corners but he's had periods where he can't really get any swing. Happened in parts of the 2013 Ashes but also in New Zealand before that. I think it's a case of his pace being quick enough when he's getting movement but not being quick enough for someone straight up and down, hence it makes it look like he hasn't got the pace anymore if it's not doing much.

What you want is Anderson to ease into a senior bowler position. Bowl when it favours him and in vital periods of the games - but the other bowlers do the donkeywork. The problem since Swann's decline is none of the other bowlers have been that reliable and so Anderson has to pick up the slack. Sooner England get a decent spinner or a consistently good third( and maybe fourth) seamer the better.

Still reckon he could be an option for the 2019 WC. He's got the kind of body frame that should last a decent time and he still could be a massive asset with the new ball in english conditions even if he is bowling at 82/83 mph. I don't think they'll even think about him until maybe 12 months before the WC and if he is still playing test cricket at that point they'll possibly ease him back into ODI cricket- dependent on how well those who have been playing in his absence have been doing.

Lyth gets the series for me. He scored a brilliant ton vs Bolt and Southee a few games ago, lets give him a chance.

If they do replace him there isn't anyone who makes a better case than Hales, but even I'd like him to make his case with a full county season.

So my first day of watching cricket in England was seriously cold. The rain was annoying but the way Australia played was frustrating. Pretty much batted like blind gimps apart from Rogers. The conditions called for some head down watchfulness and application in the batting and it wasn't there. Guys out leaving and nicking. Wtf.

I had a feeling we were in trouble when Smith went because it's been all Rogers, Smith and some lower order cameos so far. Seriously worried about Clarke with Voges putting himself out of the team with every inning.

The afternoon had good entertainment with the crowd giving it to MJ but I was hoping for more from the team. Only Haze looked solid but was giving up 4 balls. That catch at short leg was amazing. The whole crowd was guessing what happened till the square on replay. I think Nev looked solid but had them back too far.

A bad day but hopefully they can turn up tomorrow. Root looks very solid but the other end can be rolled with good enough bowling.

Had good seats and the ground looks good. Getting there was a debacle. Bus 30 mins late, then traffic and a misprinted ticket saw me miss the 1st over. Will seriously pray for anything resembling summer tomorrow.

Dry will help. Everyone the clouds rolled in the wind picked up and it felt like the temp dropped.
