*Official* New Zealand in England 2015

I don't know why they did it; but if it was to get a very very healthy lead before the 2nd new ball is available then it was a smart move IMO. We all know what Anderson and Broad can do with a new ball. Just imagine being 240/4 after 80 overs, and then losing the last 6 to the 2nd new ball.
I think we've seen that a combination of the new ball plus favourable overhead conditions can be quite deadly in this series. With NZ's most test-style batsmen in Latham and Williamson dismissed I think those two decided a counterattack was the best measure, otherwise a ball with their number on it might turn up. So it was possibly a disruptive move that was needed against Anderson and Broad, and TBF it was a better move than playing defensively for Guptill at least.

If they did have an eye on the second new ball, that's pretty ambitious but not beyond the think tank (when you consider their explanation of why Watling went ahead of BMac at Lord's).

Watling is becoming just an unbelievable player, can't wait to watch the highlights.
Do you have access to better highlights than Sky nz? Because I'm not expecting more than 5 or 6 Watling deliveries face to make their pathetic paltry highlights package.

Definitely declarer if they get to 400.... a) it should be enough, b) who knows how much time we'll lose to rain, and c) if they lose, at least avoid the indignity of having a world record scored against them.

I'd say that's likely to happen (assuming NZ get to 400) given BMac likes to keep the opposition interested in a win. I'm sure he won't forget Eden Park 2013 in a hurry, and although the England lineup has changed considerably since then, they are quite capable of shutting shop if they want to.

What is with NZ and dashing wicket-keeper batsmen? They've got like 3 in the one team.

Watling watling watling watling

Worlds. Premier. Wicketkeeper. Batsman.

Since people who don't even keep anymore get rated ahead of him this knock counts ftr:ph34r:
He wouldn't be far off

If you know how to access it, and are prepared to suffer through Mark Nicholarse's suffocating blend of hyperbole and jingoism, then the Channel 5 cricket highlights package is usually pretty good.

Normally you'd think England are in dire straits, but the game and changed and anything goes. I'd be a little surprised if we were set 400 and made them, but it's not the impossible feat it would once have been considered.

ffs. Highlights showed 10 minutes of broad and anderson being ****s, about four shots from watling.
They're always terrible. Usually almost respectable highlights of the first session but eventually editor/producer or whoever does this realises they are running out of space. And cram 4 hours of action into about 20 deliveries.

The highlights package that included Kane's Lords ton plumbed new depths.

Why they are putting overnight play into only 25 minutes is beyond me. I'm going to turn off the sports package for the winter after this. 25 minutes of ashes highlights not enough of a carrot. Although I will miss the Tour de France.

Vaughan is a complete moron.

Just ignore the evidence of the last year. It has nothing to do with run rates and everything to do with tactics.

- make runs against the old ball.
- hit Jimmy off his length if you can't keep him out (e.g. Guptill)
- have loads of slips and bowl full to batsmen like Ballance (I think a 12 year old would understand this)
- Tailenders without defensive capabilities should swing from the hip.
- General have a strong team with good bowlers and some decent batsmen.

This is not how we won in the West Indies, for example.

Cricketer Of The Year
BJ Watling.

He'll never get the due praise he deserves except inside his own group (even though a lot of us on here love the bloke). The guy doesn't do soft runs, every one of his Test hundreds has been in a tricky situation - even his debut hundred v Zimbabwe when many were questioning his place in the side.

I'd argue that he's nearly every inch as valuable to this side as Kane, possibly just sitting 2nd in the pecking order. We get to play the 'brand' of cricket we play because we have a guy at 7 who specialises in tough runs. He also adds to the group that fighting mentality, his level of preparation is spot on and his keeping has been largely faultless and is a credit to a guy who didn't even do the job full-time at state level 3 years ago.
