The fact that commentators talk bollox doesn't alter the fact that a century overrides a 50.

Uh, no. The commentators aren't wrong when they say a batsman's got a fifty when he crosses the 50 milestone. Ever notice when a batsman gets to 50, they show his career stats and they add the current innings to his number of fifties? Are the stats guys talking bollocks too?

If it's just going to be overridden if the batsman has the gall to get to 100, why even record 50 as a milestone. It's all rather silly imo.

The stats are an historical record of what has happened up to that point in time and at that point in time they're correct. You can't have a factual record where one innings is counted twice.

I think there is a difference between saying that a batsman got a 50+ score and a batsman got a fifty. The former could mean anything above 50 but the latter would imply, at least in cricketing parlance, a batsman getting a score between 50 and 99. I can see why the arbitrariness can cause confusion (for instance, 200s are counted in the 100s category) but the reality is that historical cricket stats have always divided batting stats by 50s and 100s and that is how it is.

The aim and main milestone to reach is 100. If you've fallen slughtly short, you're credited with a 50. There is nothing wrong with this other than that commentator crap which who gives a **** about anyways
