Root in the last year is playing as well as any English player has in the last 20 years. Only player who played better as consistently is Vaughan in that Indian summer and ashes winter. Looks totally in control of his game at present. Long may it last as we know it won't go like this forever.

I know Trott and Cook had their runs of brilliance but they weren't as good to watch as Vaughan and Root were/are.

The anti-England this.

Getting driven too often but prepared to be driven to take wickets. Just trying to find a middle ground, but good to see them overattacking.

Ok, it's 20 minutes before tea and NZ have bowled 21 overs. Here's a revolutionary thought...you win the toss and put the opposition in. Maybe just maybe you should try to bowl as many balls as possible at the opposition in the morning before the pitch gets sun on it and the atmosphere is still heavy or whatever it was that made you want to bowl first in the first place. But no, the brains trust of every test side seem happy to bowl 24-25 overs in the first two hours, then end up bowling 38 overs late in the day when the pitch has flattened out and everyone's tired....

stokes looks like an offie with a good slider would destroy him. bet swann before his breakdown would have loved bowling to him.
