Munro seems to enjoy a lot of support on CW, find it perplexing. Seem to remember him looking distinctly village whenever I watched him for NZ and for the Aces in those T20 tournaments (great reverse hitter I'll admit). Then again I didn't think Oram would cut it as a batsman when I first saw him, so open to having a re-look.
I will try to give you the history of it.

Munro has been closely followed on CW since a particular HRV cup game where he made 60 off 40 balls (approximately). Someone (possibly me) said that he looked village and didn't deserve to be playing for Auckland. Someone (possibly me) hacked at him in his next two or three appearances which eventually started a "fight" (it was brief) between some Munro supporters and those who didn't rate him. We have tracked him closely ever since.
He did look ghastly in his test match so we never want to see him in white clothing again, but he has a reasonable average in ODIs and gets on with the job and his lack of technique doesn't seem to matter as much in that format. His biggest asset is that pace doesn't worry him.
Of note, Flem invented the "Munro law" to deal with his double century he scored out of the number 6 batting position. The law of Munro is that any runs scored from lower than number 4 in the batting order in the plunket shield should not count towards national selection.

Haha it's strange how vividly I remember it that way

I see Craig hasn't played for Otago for a while due to a knee injury. If he's not fit for the May tests, who do NZ go with? Go with Jeets (if he's available) or the Tastle? Surely Sodhi can't still be favoured purely on the basis of his age.
Should be Patel, will probably be Sodhi.

Jeets has the wrong attitude. He has a taste for sarcasm and smug subtleties. He has the PEWs attitude, the Andrew de Boorder attitude.

Refused to rejig his product to suit market-led NZC tastes, crawled up his own ass into an increasingly sullen and esoteric irrelevance.

Sooo Im in WA haven not seen Plunket Shield . is Bracewell and Wagner bowling well enough for test cricket ? They were the incumbent bowlers. I have never seen Henry bowl the red ball so whats he like ?

based on the pitch perhaps NZ could go for an all out seem attack of Southee , Boult , Wagner and Bracewell with Williamson rolling over a few offies. .Sounds like people are for Brownlie to open rather than Rutherford and Guppys had his test chances. Mark Craig or Ish Sodhi for the tests. Mark Craig did take a 5 for against the Windies last year ?

Guptill's last chance opening in tests was over 2 years ago (the tests in South Africa). Since then he's worked with Crowe on his technique and that seems to have worked reasonably well. Add in his county experience & I think it will be a very close call.

This just through from NZ Cricket --- Mike Hesson on the show today...
BLACKCAPS Test and ODI squads for England tour named
The return of Cricket World Cup star Martin Guptill and the call-up of fast-bowler Matt Henry are the features of the BLACKCAPS Test squad to play England in a two match series starting next month.
Guptill, who last played a Test on the corresponding tour of England in 2013, made his debut in 2009 and has two Test centuries to his name, including a highest score of 189.
In 31 Tests he’s averaged just under 30.00.
BLACKCAPS coach and selector Mike Hesson said Guptill was able to cover several batting positions and would have a chance to further his claims during the two warm-up games ahead of the opening Test.
“This is a stable, established Test side but there will be opportunities for contenders,” said Hesson.
“Martin’s a classically-styled batsman and there’s really no reason why he can’t be as influential in the longer game as he is in the short.”
Hesson said Henry, who received his chance partly because of the unavailability of the injured James Neesham, was ready for the challenge.
“It’s another step up for Matt but we’ve been impressed by the maturity and skill-set he’s already shown in the ODI format.”
Given conditions expected in England in May and June, Mark Craig is the sole specialist spinner selected.
In the absence of those players with IPL commitments, BJ Watling will be captain in the warm-up games against Somerset and Worcester, while pace bowlers Jacob Duffy (SBS Otago Volts) and Ben Wheeler (Devon Hotel Central Stags), and all-rounder Mitchell Santner (SKYCITY Northern Knights) will join the squad.
Santner, meanwhile, is the only uncapped player selected in the BLACKCAPS ODI and T20I squad.
The 23-year-old left-hander averaged 36.22 with the bat during the most recent Ford Trophy season and took 11 wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin.
"Mitchell brings to the table some all-round cover", said Hesson.
"We're hoping he can take his opportunities and continue the excellent progress he's been making over recent seasons."

Via Tony Veitch's Facebook. I have no idea how Rutherford is still in the squad over Brownlie. They must see Guptill as his competition? Henry with a duke would be an awesome sight, wouldnt be surprised if he jumps in front of Bracewell in the pecking order.

Awesome to see Santner there, he could add something in the all rounder spot. Being in camp with the BC's will teach him alot.

I can't remember the last time we showed so much faith in an opener. Refreshing in many ways yet rudds isn't likely to repay the faith for a while imo

I dunno we showed faith in Blair Hartland who was so far out if his depth i wasn't funny for 9 agonizing tests.

Surprises for me.

Mitchell Santner. Living in WA never heard of him. Looking at Stats only 20 matches at 27 and 28 Ford and Plunket Shield. Not exactly setting the world on fire bit still young.
Poor Colin Munro. Not much else he can do really to get into the ODI side as an allrounder. Age must be against him.

Hmm did not know James Neesham was injured.
Im not surprised to see only one spinner selected. Swinging conditions and I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4 seam pace attack of Boult , Southee , Bracewell and Henry/Wagner

To be honest no big changes and only one bolter in Santner.

Its good as NZ was changing test sides quicker than changeling underpants a few years ago.

Good squad. Obviously I'd prefer Brownlie but don't mind them picking Guptill while he's hot,

So I guess my team for Lord's would Henry at first change and ... sigh... Guptill to open. Can't believe the selectors haven't learned their lesson about him, and really feel for Brownlie even if he did fall away in his last few matches this season.

Great to see Bmac sticking around in the ODI squad.

I have faith in the new Guptill defense. Crowe made T Mac nearly test standard. He can make Guptill a test batsman.

Good squad and good warm up squad. Spudderford the only questionable pick but he probably won't play anyway.
