Say we required a win in this match to take us to fifth but chasing a win meant we risk losing the game and drawing the series - versus drawing this match means we win the series but remain sixth.
That's why I say "series don't really matter"

Yup, the key here is that both of them need to realise that and not think "Well I haven't hit a boundary" - fortunately with these two, I don't get the feeling that will happen often. The others in the side, not so much.

He was advocating Boult being placed ahead of Southee in the order. Then said Southee had enough potential to be a #8 but wasn't living up to it.

I think he's just looking to manipulate Mathews. The pair will already know Mathews is looking to restrict, but they'll want more men out to stop Mathews realising he needs to clamp down on the ones and twos.

Forgetting the chances he's given in this innings, my previous comment around hoping Williamson looked at Sanga and said to himself "That's what a #3 does for his side" - Williamson has played a Sangakarra like innings here, batting as his side capitulated and keeping things flowing.

Yeah, even Prior played quite a bit as a specialist batsman in County Cricket. Shows that nowadays the best method is to get a good batsman and improve their keeping, rather than vice versa.

Watling was always a keeper through every grade until he happened to get into ND where there were was another keeper in the squad. The idea that "He just picked up the gloves after being a specialist bat" isn't accurate.
