***Official*** India in Australia 2014-5

Maxwell's stats might look good but he's spent most of the time coming in at 7 or 8 for the Vics at First Class level. He's definitely got talent but shouldn't be anywhere near the Test side and should be looking to promote himself up the Vic order if he wants to get serious about Test cricket.

Unfortunately being a part of the Australian ODI side he misses so many First Class games that it'll be hard for him to genuinely earn his spot in the side.

Yes, I pretty much agree that there are better batsmen that I rather be tried before maxwell, but if, and it's a BIG if, maxwell continues to develop in the first class level, he's probably a pretty decent option as a spinning all rounder.

Also shaun marsh under an injury cloud again. Where have I heard this before...?

Hit on the hand. Should be ok.

I hear that Clarke's gonna be in the commentary for Boxing Day, apparently Channel 9 invited him?

On Watson:

Harris / Johnson/ Hazlewood / Lyon feels like an attack that at some point is going to have a Harris injury and Johnson bowling filth. I feel like you NEED a 5th bowler there to stop the rot and not heap all the pressure on a guy in his first few tests and/or Lyon who has already commented he finds the kind of tight and probing spells Watson bowls useful.

If you think Faulkner / Henriques / Maxwell / some other all-rounder is better. Fine. If Siddle was still bowling like he was 2-3 years ago I'd also say 4 bowlers is fine. Ditto with Mitch Marsh when he comes back I guess.

It's not just about Harris getting injured, he also performs way better as an attacking bowler than one who performs the workhorse duties and runs in all day. Hazlewood is somewhat similar. With Siddle not playing I'd say Watson's role as a bowler is even more important since he bowls tight and can reduce the trio's (J,H & H) burden.

His bowling is good, as is his fielding. It's his batting that's majorly concerning, but I think he can perform way better with the bat if he's at 6 instead of 3.

brad mcnamara: "hey the public are saying we need variety. lets chuck in another australian captain"
I dont think we made enough fun at C9 for deciding to, at last, employ a female commentator for the Ryobi cup, and then simply recruiting the current national captain of the women's team to be said commentator

He's rarely if ever batted at 8. And last year he was bloody fantastic for the Vics, played some wonderful knocks.

Gets a worse wrap than what he deserves.

I think that's part of it though, a number of his significant knocks have come with the tail when really what he needs is to learn how to build an innings which you can only do consistently in the top four or five, really.

Which is why I said that he needs to learn shot selection and application because obviously he has the talent.

If he can do that and combine it with his aggression he can be a decent number 6.

Maxwell strikes me as being in the same position Smith was 4 years ago.

Capable OD player who really needs a full season of Shield cricket to properly learn his game.

Lets have some fun.

Dhawan dropped. Rohit opening. Raina at 6.

Maxwell replaces Watson.,

Lets turn this test into 2 ODIs.

Big risk in this, though. David Hookes, another fine exponent of the fine-leg-to-long-on hoik, said in his autobio that he was smashing it and in form and not getting picked in the Test side. Asked why, was told he needed to learn to build an innings, that run-a-ball tons weren't how a Test player should bat. Went back to Shield, scratched his way to a couple of slow tons and got picked horribly out of form, predictably failed.

If Maxwell does his most productive work going hard, he should be picked on that basis. A nose for the big occasion is worth a lot in any Test side, especially when you factor in his fielding, presence and even his bowling in the context of Watson not bowling as much.

Also I wouldn't be too sure of India going down hard in this Test. The MCG tends to bite the overwhelming favourite on the arse, big occasion combined with a backs-to-the-wall Indian side could prove a dangerous combo

backs to the wall Indian sides tend to usually turn around and bend over tbh
